Could "Leachman" be an Anglicized form of the German name "Leichtman"?

The most common explanation I have heard and read is an English variation from Leech man, or "doctor". Another possibility is from Lach Man or man of the lake. I haven't found many German or Jewish Leachmans, but there seem to be a few.

David, I found some of the Leachmans listed as Luckman. From memory, I can't remember whether it was Foster Leachman or Matthew Leachman.

Whilst searching for Leachmans in London, I found this phonetic equivalent in the baptism of Jenne le Chemin, daughter of Phillipe le Chemin (16 Aug 1629, Threadneedle Street, French Hugenot, IGI Batch C049031).
My schoolboy French tells me "Chemin" means "Road" or "Way".
Makes a change from leeches! Jim

Nancy - where did you find the name Luckman? What state and what type of documentation was it in? Do the places and dates match other references to Foster or Matthew Leachman

Davud, here is where I found them on the cenus: I got this off the USGenweb site. It is my Foster and Elizabeth Leachman who were born in VA. Sorry to be so long in answering.

Thank you Nancy. I looked at the original image of the census via Ancestry.com and the name does look like Luckmen. However, in census lists from other years, the name appears to be written as Leachman (1840) and Leechman (eg. Carlos in 1880). I think this is just one of the problems of poor handwriting.

You are welcome, David, and I am curious to know if anyone else had come across these same Leachmans and just overlooked them? I sent a copy of them to my cousin, Linda, when I found them just so she could have a copy for her records too.
