In the 1860 U.S. Census for Jefferson County Kansas (Jefferson Twp), which is now Harrison Twp in Chautauqua County Kansas, I've found the earliest information on George W. Layton, who was born in 1834/35 in Kentucky. George and his wife America are listed with a 1-year old daughter, Josephine.

There is also a Martin Layton in the household as well, aged 22 and also from KY. This could be the same Martin V. Layton who enlisted with the Union Army in 1861 in Kansas.

The next household in that Census record is for Noah Layton, b. Abt 1812 in Kentucky. He is listed with a much younger wife and three small children.
