The most reliable source of information on the early Lothrop/Lathrop family genealogy is:

Elijah Baldwin Huntington and Julia M. Huntington, A genealogical memoir of the Lo-Lathrop family in this country : embracing the descendants, as far as known, of the Rev. John Lothropp, of Scituate and Barnstable, Mass., and Mark Lothrop, of Salem and Bridgewater, Mass. and the first generation of descendants of other names (Ridgefield, Connecticut: 1884, n.d.).

Unfortunately, the original book was published without any source references and have been lost. For my research, I have found it to be quite accurate for its time period.

http://www.lothropp.org/UploadFiles/Articles/The_Huntington....

Ed I have letters from a John E Ransom that he wrote to my husbands grandmother Celestia A Lathrop Beckworth. He writes that the Lathrop line is kin to the Ransom thru Susan Ellis whose mother was Sarah Ransom. He wrote everyone he could find in the early 1900's that was kin to the Ransoms and Lathrops. I think his work is in the Buffalo New York Public Library. Have been in contact with them and they are looking for me. His genealogy work was put in the Grosvenor Library and the Buffalo Library took it over. They have a section there called the Ransom Collection and I think it has all his paperwork there. He kept all his correspondence from everyone who wrote him back. If I hear anything for them will forward on to you. I also have a letter that was written to Celestia Lathrop Beckworth from E B Goodrich. He calls Celestia his niece. Will send copy if you would like to have it. Also a few letters from George E Lathrop to Celestia his daughter.
My Lathrop ancestors (George and son George W.) were early settlers in Jones County, Iowa. They lived in Oxford Township. Information can be found at IowaJones.org on the internet. Many of the descendants still live in Jones and Linn Counties in Iowa but others are in Arizona, California, Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, and other states.

I don't know how many George W. Lathrops there were but want to caution readers not to confuse this one with another who was born about the same time in Ohio and moved to Jones County, Iowa, where many of his descendants still live. His father was also George Lathrop, born Chenango County, New York, married Sandusky County, Ohio, and died Jones County, Iowa.

Descendants of John Howland Lathrop & children Jane and Lincoln Lathrop?

I'm trying to find any descendants of John Howland Lathrop (b. 06 Jun 1880 in Jackson, MI). He and his wife Lita Schlesinger-Howland (b. 18 Jul 1883 in CA) had at least 2 children named Jane (b. 908 in CA) and Lincoln (b. 7 May 1916 in Brooklyn, NY). I believe that Lincoln Lathrop died on 25 Feb 2001 in Palm Desert, Riverside, California.

"The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Saturday, March 26, 1904

Gardiner LATHROP was at Nice, France, on March 11.
At that time he was in good health and spirits. He is
homeward bound, after pleasant experiences in the Far
East.

In a letter to a Kansas City friend he writes: "I have just
received my first two Stars since I left home, and they have
done me more good, I think, than all my travels. After circling
the globe I am working my way homeward a more devoted
American and a more loyal Kansas Cityan than ever."

(Note: the "Star" he refers to is the newspaper.)
======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo8
I have a question about Mary Jane Lathrop Dennis being the daughter of William Lathrop.

On the 1850 census of Shelby County, Texas, William Lathrop is not married.

Lathrop Cathron 44 F ? VA -
" William 26 M Son ? " -
" Ransom 17 M " IN -
" Susan 15 F Daughter ? " -
" Jane 12 F " " -
Stansberry Louisa 24 F ? OH -
" Mary 6 F " " -

Notice that Jane Lathrop is 12 on the census, which would mean that she was born around 1838. Also she was born in Indiana.

Then on the 1870 census of Shelby County, Texas, is the Dennis family.

-
01-263-263 Dennis, M. 50 M W Farmer 150 GA
" M. J. 28 F W Keeps House IN
" M. B. 9 M W TX
" M.C. 7 F W TX

Notice that M. J. Dennis is 28 on this census. Notice also that she was born in Indiana. I think she is too old to be the daughter of William Lathrop, the son of Hazier and Cathron Lathrop. According to this census she would have been born in 1842, which means she would have to be on the 1850 census.

I am not related to the Lathrops. However, my aunt married Jefferson Davis Skinner, the son of Susan Lathrop, the daughter of Hazier and Cathron Lathrop.

Do you have documentation that Mary Jane Lathrop Dennis is the daughter of William Lathrop?
Looking for Michigan Lathrop cousins related to Solomon and Clarissa Dunwell Lathrop. They were from Canaan, Columbia, NY and settled in Michigan after 1830. They were suppose to have had five sons and six daughters. I believe my great great great grandmother Clarissa Lathrop Nelson (1807-1889) was one of Solomon and Clarissa's daughters. Other children were Elizabeth, Hopestill and Horace. The Nelsons lived in Genesee County, Michigan.

Justin,

It would be nice if you provided your personal e-mail address.

I'm not aware of any Lathrop family books covering families during the 20th century. The definitive book about the Lathrop family history "A genealogical memoir of the Lo-Lathrop family in this country ..." was published in 1884 by EB Huntington. Were you aware of this? This book covers the genealogy of Lathrop families before roughly 1850. Though the book is very comprehensive, it doesn't cover every Lathrop family in detail. For instince, my great great great grandmother Lathrop is not specifically listed in the book. She died in 1887.

The older the vital dates are that you can provide, the better the chances of connecting to your proper Lathrop family ancestral line. I would suggest contacting the The Lothropp Foundation: http://www.lothropp.org/
and see if they can help you locate your earlier family lines. It shouldn't be difficult to do this since you are a Lathrop by name and have Lathrops on both sides of your family.

Good Luck and get back with an update!
