Fay Lanphear

Jack Lamphier  (View posts) Posted: 11 Nov 2000 5:51PM GMT
Fay Lanphear, b 21 Jun 1909 d 11 Aug 1996 in Ft smith Ark. was the daughter of Burton
and Sarah Houghton Lanphear. She not only was Miss California but was chosen Miss America in 1925.At one time there was a photo on line of that.I havent searched in years. She was not as fortunate in her love life apparently, having been married 3 times.First to an unknown subject.Second to W.J. Edwards
and lastly to former child actor, grown at the time,Jackie Coogan, who we all know and love as the original Uncle Fester in the original Addams Family on TV in the 60's
This union occurred in 1952 and produced
son Leslie,b 1954 who I believe is still alive.

Thanks for the information, Jack. I now know that Fay is not the Miss California I am looking for, as William was her last (and I believe only) husband. Thanks for the help anyway.

Fay Lanphier was my aunt. She was born in 1905. She married Spiegel (of the Spiegel catalog)and was only married 6 months to him. She married Winfield J. Daniels who owned the University of California bookstores.
They had two daughters Shirley and Marilyn. I believe that Shirley now lives in Hawaii and Marilyn still lives in California

OOPs! I filled in Jack Lamphier's name and address to the previous message instead of mine. Sorry for the mistake.

My father is Floyd Lanphier, born May 10, 1907. He is the eldest son of Casper Lanphier. Casper lived in Lansing, Michigan, joined the US Navy and fought in the Spanish American War. Left the Navy when the ship was in San Francisco,California. Hitchhiked up to Ft. Bragg/Mendocino California and became a sawyer. Married Emily Olson, my paternal grandmother around 1903. Eldest daughter, Fay, born in 1905 was Miss America in 1925. Then my father in 1907, then Clyde, Roy, Dolly and Gerald.

The Thomas G. Lanphier, Jr. who you located through www.findagrave.com is descended from the Lan(m)phiers who settled around Lucan Ontario in the 1800s, they came down to the US at the end of the century and settled in Iowa then Omaha, Nebraska. If it helps, these are Roman Catholic Lanphiers.

This information is not correct. The wife of Coogan was Dorothy and she outlived him.

Fay the Miss America, died in 1959. Dorothy however lived until past 1984.

Also the one who was Miss America in 1925 was not a 16-year old girl, but rather around 20.
