This is Susan Button, not replying to my own post, but to set the records straight. Just when you think you have heard it all, along comes somthing that you can only sit and wonder WHY do these things happen to me....
That being said, the reply I have for my own post is this, the Mary Jane Langford who I thought was my GTGrandfathers sister, was in fact MY Gt. Grandmother, Here is the facts and I hope I dont get mixed up.
John and MaryJane Langford, were in fact living as man and wife, but he took her name of Langford, his being Kayes, we can only surmise he was using the name Langford as a alias, we don't know why, but it must not have been too legal or honest..... They had 4 children that I have listed Charles, Mary, Susannah and James (rumour has it there were two other boys, but no sign of them in records etc.
John and Mary Jane never showed up on any census forms that I could find, and believe me I spent months and months trolling through them all. Except when it came to the 1911..... here we find John and MaryJane Kayes living alone, now married and listing no children to the marriage.... honestly can I be losing my mind, or did these two folk just lie to the census bureau.
The children were sent to an industrial type school where they lived and learned a trade, or so the story is told, but this school was in Scotland, The Authorities must have stepped in at some point.
Only James and his sister Susannah stayed in Liverpool as they grew up, Charles went off to the Great War of 1914-1918, and was killed, and Mary was sent to Canada as a Home child, We were fortunate enough to have Mary come and seek out her family in the early 1960's and the end result was she found a HUGE amount of family, and most of that family ended up in Canada.
I am not sure why I wanted to put this down in writing, but it feels good to be able to make heads or tails out of the whole thing in print.
Any remarks or comments will be welcome, and if you feel you are related, this would be most welcome too, especially anyone with the last name of Kayes.
