Hester Landrum's origin (1860 Grant co KY-1929 Pendleton Co) (Mrs. Nute Plunkett)

2015Feb from Warren Forsythe - genealogy126 (at) fairpoint.net
digitizing decades of Grant Co KY area research by Virginia Childers Hanks, longtime member of societies for Grant Co and Childers-Childress Assn
-
(as is usually compiled) LANDRUM brothers married SIMPSON sisters:
Two daughters, Emily and Marinda, of the 1818 Pendleton Co KY marriage of Edmund Simpson to Sarah Marksberry
--each married a son of 1820 Grant Co KY marriage of Richard James Landrum to Betty Frakes
-
NOW NEW FAMILY RECORD ADDED:
a third Simpson sister, Sarah, bore a child 1860 with one of the above Landrum brothers, while evidently each was married to somebody else:
Despite the unconventional parentage, Hester Jane Landrum (1860 Grant Co KY - 1929 Pendleton Co KY) was soon adopted by one of the above sisters and her Landrum husband, and Hester went on to bear at least 6 kids by her first 2 husbands, both of whom she outlived.

DOCUMENTATION FOR THAT NEW FAMILY RECORD FOLLOWS (BELOW):

at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...

is a revised descendancy of those Landrum and Simpson descendants
who started from Grant Co KY area

DOCUMENTATION of new family record listed above:

Hester Jane Rogers in the Kentucky, Death Records, 1852-1953
Name: Hester Jane Rogers
[Hester Jane Landrum]
Death Date: 5 Jul 1929
Death Location: Pendleton, Kentucky, USA
Age: 69
Gender: Female
Race: White
Birth Date: 23 Jan 1860
Birth Location: Kentucky
Father's name: Louis Landrum
Father's Birth Location: Kentucky
Mother's name: Sarah Simpson
Mother's Birth Location: Kentucky
Source Information
Ancestry.com. Kentucky, Death Records, 1852-1953 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc,

Hester Jane Landrum’s death record tells her father as Wm Lewis Landrum and her mom as Sarah Simpson,a sister of the Simpson that some had compiled as Hester’s mother on internet trees.(possibly a fairly common illegit mother being the younger sister of W L Landrum’s wife) The record certainly seems to say that was an illegitimate birth from adultery, as both W L Landrum and Sarah Simpson were married to other spouses at the time, as near as I can infer.

++++++++++++++++++++++++
1870 us census shows Hester Landrum did 1870-1880 live with her mother's sister
Marinda (Simpson) Landrum
+++++++++++++++++++++=
Wester Landman
[Hester Landrum]
[Wester Landrum]
Age in 1870: 10
Birth Year: abt 1860
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1870: Williamstown, Grant, Kentucky
Race: White
Gender: Female
Post Office: Williamstown
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members: Name Age
Thomas Landrum32
Marrida Landrum30
William L Landrum12
George R Landrum10
Albert R Landrum4
Edmond J Landrum1
Florence Honesty46
Wester Landman10 [HESTER LANDRUM IT SAYS IN THE CENSUS HANDWRITING]
Year: 1870; Census Place: Williamstown, Grant, Kentucky; Roll: M593_463; Page: 575B; Image: 456; Family History Library Film: 545962
Hi Barbara,

I would be very interested in the information you have on Reuben's line. I have a Reuben Landrum born abt. 1794 who married a Rachel born abt. 1798. They had several children together including Nancy, James, Louis, Abner, Lucinda, and Carter. This information is from the 1850 census in Macon Co, Missouri. I have not been able to verify who his parents are, or who Rachel is, however. Please let me know if this is the same person, and if so, any information you have on that line!

Thanks, Heather

Re: Thomas Landrum of Amherst Co., VA and Wilkes Co., GA; his son Burton Landrum

There was another name, Burtonhead, that is sometimes written Boikenhead. I think these were both versions of the English surname "Birkenhead," which is the name of a village near Manchester, England. (There was an ancient Birkenhead family there, from which I descend also.) The Boutwell family (no known relationship to the Landrums, but a family with which I am familiar from other research) used the name Burtonhead. It seems possible to me that Boikenhead Landrum and Burton Landrum could be the same person, but this is by no means conclusive -- just a possibility. My primary interest in this group at present is identifying the husband of Mary Landrum, daughter of Thomas Landrum; Thomas's will names a grandson Boikenhead Wright, while Thomas's daughter Nancy's will names a nephew Burton Wright.

LIZZIE3 LANDRUM (JOSEPH A. (JOE)2, WILLIAM JUDSON1) was born March 1884. She married UNKNOWN HUFF. He died Bet. 1914 - 1920 in Georgia.

Children of LIZZIE LANDRUM and UNKNOWN HUFF are:
i.	DAVID4 HUFF, b. Abt. 1904.
ii.	JOSIE HUFF, b. Abt. 1907.
iii.	DOSA HUFF, b. Abt. 1910.
iv.	FRANK HUFF, b. Abt. 1914.

I believe that the Della Landrum and the Lizzie Landrum that you have above are the same person. From what I understand, my great-grandmother, Lizzie Ardel (Della) Landrum, married George Washington Huff. I know that they had at least two children, Jewell Huff (my grandmother and Augustus (Gus) Huff, Sr, and I believe that Jutson Huff was also one of their children. See the link below. It shows the grave of Lizzie and her husband George. I can give you further information on the descendants of Jewell Huff if you are interested.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=23...

Kenton County Kentucky Landrums

I am the grandaughter of Norman Albert Landrum, born March 18 1912 and died Sept 27 1976 in Independence Kentucky. I am looking for relatives. There are no records and I know for a fact that after he divorced my Grandmother that he remarried and had several children. We visited them on what I remember to be a farm. They lived in a trailer and had a house on the property that was used as a play house for the children. Norman Albert's parents are Benjamin Landrum and Catherine (Katie) Boyce. My Great Great Grandfather is Benjamin Franklin Landrum born Jun 23 1846 died Oct 19 1928.

James Calvin Landrum

Looking for info about my g-great grandfather James Calvin Landrum, born in ALABAMA about 1832 (could be earlier) and died in Mariposa County, California.

J.C. Landrum was a miner and farmer in California, starting about 1860. He had spent time in Texas and may have gotten into trouble there (before fleeing to California).

In California, he married a full-blooded Indian ("Indian Jane") and fathered five children: Simeon, Jesse, Henry, Alice, Leonora. He was well known for being an excellent rifleman. He was part Cherokee.

Many male relatives have the middle name (or even first name) "Calvin" --- could be carried over from earlier ancestry.

Any information much appreciated.

Leanna, Hello, I am Rita Landrum, my son is Corey Landrum, your half brother.
I am trying to make a Family tree collection for Corey and I have found several documents for your grandmother, Opal Hackett's side, but not alot on Havon Landrum's side. I can't find anything on Minnie and Robert D. Landrum. But, I found several documents with Havon's mother being a "Ozzie" Landrum. Could that be right?
Have you found any more info since 2000, when you were working on it? Corey is still living in Florida. I know he would love to hear from you. Take care honey.
Kind Regards, Rita

Hello, were you successful in finding Theodore Landrum? I too have been looking for someone who matches that description. He was born in Mississippi in 1885 and married my grandmother around 1923. His middle name was Mason. I understand that he may have died under an assumed name. He served time in prison for bank fraud and was released in 1916. From there he was supposed to be transferred to Texas to serve a term for something similar. I would appreciate any information that you have. The thing that makes me believe we are looking for the same person is that he was a salesman for Singer.

I doubt there is a connection here, but figured I would ask anyway. Is there any chance that the Margaret Landrum (1876-1958) who married Robert Van Morris (1868 - 1938) and resided in Charlotte County, VA is related to these Landrum's? I am having an extremely difficult time tracking down her parents.

The link was not pulling up for me. However, this still leaves me with a couple of unanswered questions. It seems conclusive that there was a Margaret L Landrum who was the daughter of William Warren and Ida Dunster.

I am just trying to find out if that is the same Margaret L Landrum I am looking for who is in the 1910 census in Charlotte County, VA married to a Robert Van Morris. This census has her birthplace as Virginia which is throwing me off a bit.

However, I do notice differences between censuses from time to time. For example, specific to this family there are TWO 1880 censuses, but it is highly likely this is the same family:

1) one with Margaret in the household of Willie and Ida in Georgia (her name is listed as Madge) with a sister named Grace age 4
2) one with Margaret (born in Georgia) in the household of Henry and Jane Dunster in Rhode Island with a sister named Grace age 3 and a Mother named Ida

If any Landrum's can help me with understanding what happened to Margaret that would be extremely helpful as it could me to understand this is the wrong path for me to go down. I do see a Maggie L Landrum that got married to a W.E. Bradford in Oglethorpe, GA in 1897, so it is possible that this is the daughter of Ida and William and I am completely on the wrong track.

Thanks,
Justin

The brothers name is unknow and he died at a early age after going to the Landrums. We believe the children came from the Carolinias.
Hi ! It's been 3 yrs since your post. I hope you are still involved here. My Landrum family was from several counties in KY including Warren and Beathitt counties. My gr-gr-grandfather Lindsey married a Lucinda Hounshell so there may be a connection with you and me. Nelson Landrum born about 1798 +or- was the father of Lindsey Landrum born in 1841 who married Lucinda Hounshell 24 Jan 1865 in Allen, Ky. I wonder if you have any information on Nelson and/or Lindsey. I've hit the "brickwall" with Nelson. There are some "suggestions" about his background but I'd like to be sure. Thanks and good luck with your family research..

Re: Thomas Landrum of Amherst Co., VA and Wilkes Co., GA; his son Burton Landrum

After all these years you probably have all the information you need. So in the for what is worth department: The Amherst County Museum recently provided me a copy of Deed Book G page 394 for Amherst County, Virginia. In it Thomas Landrum gives power of attorney to William Banks (husband of Tamzin Landrum and mentioned in Thomas' will) to sell some land in Montgomery County, Virginia. One witness is Thomas Landrum, Jr. and a note in the mg says "Original delivered to Burton Landrum 30th Sept 1794." If you are interested let me know and I'll sent you a copy.

You mention Burton not being mentioned in Thomas' will. How likely is it that Boikenhead and Burton are the same person, with one or the other name being a middle name? I find no other mention of Thomas having a son named Boikenhead, unless they are the same person. I find it interesting that Thomas' son Thomas is not mentioned and suppose they had a severe conflict Have you stumbled across any information on that? Interestingly, Thomas Jr named a son Burton from whom I descend.

Finally, the Taliaferro family and the Landrum family evidently had some connection both in Amherst County, VA, and in Wilkes County, GA. In Zach Taliaferro's will (Thomas Sr or Jr was witness for several of Zach's transactions) probated July 19, 1797, he mentions a son Burkenhead (I assume a misspelling of Boikenhead) who along with two other sons were to get 1275 acres in Georgia (location not mentioned). That information is found in The Wills of Amherst County, Virginia 1761-1865, an abstract by Bailey Fulton Davies, 1985, Southern Historical Press, Inc., Easley SC. I found the volume in my county library and can provide a copy of the page if you don't have access.

Woody

I am looking for the parents of E.L.Landrum 1885-1949 or Mary Landrum(Allen is her maiden name)1884. Both from Tarrytown,GA. They are my great grandparents but I have hit a wall. My Grandpa was nicknamed EL but he was actually Ed Landrum. Mary was quite a common name then!
