Hello,
I am hoping someone out there knows something about a Lanagan/Lanegan/Lanigan family from the Oakville area of what used to be, Halton County Ontario.
The parents are Michael and Mary, and they show up in the 1861, 1871, and 1881 censuses. I believe Michael and Mary both die before the 1891 census.
*Possibly* my ancestor, James W. Lanagan, is their son James from the 1861 census, listed as "absent", born in US. My James was born abt 1846 in NY, and died in Erie, PA, when he was hit by a train (he was a conductor).
If anyone knows anything about this family, I would be EXTREMELY interested! Everything seems to fit for this to be my James, but I need some proof. My James married Catharine Corrigan, who was from St. Catharine's, Ontario.
By 1870, James and Catharine were living in Erie, PA, and to my knowledge, neither of them went back to Canada ever. Some of Catharine's family came to the US, and she seemed to stay in touch with them, but James on the other hand leaves no mention of his family, other than a story that his father died "in the line of duty in NYC in 1887". I have seen no reference anywhere to ANY Lanagan dying "in the line of duty" in 1887, nor any year close to that.
