Bertha A. Lamme - Benjamin G. Lamme - b. Clark County, Ohio
Bertha was born on her family's farm near Springfield, Ohio, (Clark County) on Dec. 16, 1869.

Bertha Lamme-Feicht
Gifted engineer and pioneer, Bertha Lamme was born on her family's farm near Springfield, Ohio on December 16, 1869 and died in Pittsburgh on November 20, 1943.
She graduated from Olive Branch High School in 1887.
She was the first woman to receive an engineering degree from The Ohio State University when she graduated from their Mechanical Engineering Department in 1893. Lamme today is considered to be the first American woman to graduate in a main discipline of engineering other than civil engineering.

After graduation, she went to work at Westinghouse Company where she worked in mathematics and machine design on a team of engineers, led by her brother Benjamin. A 1907 B_Lamme2edition of the Pittsburgh Dispatch reported "[Bertha] Lamme's work in designing dynamos and motors won her reputation, even in that hotbed of gifted electricians and inventors."
In Benjamin's autobiography (1926), Bertha wrote "I have been asked to tell of his (Benjamin's) influence on leading me into an engineering course for my college work. I cannot recall that he ever directly urged me to study along such lines, but he must, by suggestion and his own enthusiasm for such work, have led my mind in that direction. I had no aptitude for mechanics, but I did have a liking for mathematics. For this reason, he probably thought I would succeed in engineering." Her achievements were reported to have inspired fellow women contemporaries to study engineering, but were accomplished in a time where women were welcome to compete with men only until they were married.
She worked at Westinghouse until 1905 when she married Russell Feicht (OSU class of 1890 and Director of Engineering at Westinghouse at the time) and thereafter did engineering work at home in addition to her role as wife and mother.
Her daughter Florence, born in 1910, became a physicist and was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the time of her passing.

Bertha Lamme's work has been honored by numerous groups such as the Society of Women Engineers through their "Bertha Lamme Memorial Scholarship" and the "Bertha Lamme-Westinghouse Scholarship Grant."

Benjamin Garver Lamme was born on a farm near Springfield, Ohio, on January 12, 1864, and graduated from Olive Branch High School in 1883. From an early age, Lamme tinkered with machinery and made experiments of his ideas on the family farm. In later years he was able to solve complex problems in his engineering work using mental calculations, instead of a slide rule.
He graduated in mechanical engineering from The Ohio State University in 1888.
After a few months back on the farm, Benjamin joined the Westinghouse Company in 1889.
Lamme designed a single-reduction railway motor with machine-wound coils which was marketed by Westinghouse beginning in 1891. He designed much of the apparatus for the Westinghouse exhibit at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

In addition to his design work on the Niagara Falls alternators, Lamme designed the "monster machine" for the power plant of the Manhattan Elevated Railway in New York City. The plant used eight slow-speed direct-current generators, each of which was forty feet high and weighed approximately a million pounds.
He was among the leaders in the introduction of large turboelectric generators which began to supplant older slow-speed, engine-driven, generators in the first decade of the 20th century. Lamme received 162 patents during his career.

Benjamin Lamme became chief engineer at Westinghouse in 1903 and held the position for the rest of his life.

During World War I, he represented the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) on the Naval Consulting Board. He received the Edison Medal of the AIEE in 1919 in recognition for his contributions to the electrical power field.

Lamme had a lifelong interest in archaeology and had a sizable personal collection of projectile points and other artifacts. He was also an amateur photographer and had an interest in mathematical puzzles.
Lamme never married, and made his home with his sisters.

He died in Pittsburgh on July 8, 1924 at the age of 60. His will included a bequest to AIEE which was used to initiate the Lamme Medal in 1928 to recognize outstanding design engineers in the power field.
He also endowed two engineering scholarships at Ohio State University, and contributed to the support and education of a number of French orphans after World War I.
His autobiography, which included a list of his published papers, was published in 1926, and the Westinghouse Company published a collection of his technical papers in 1919.

----------------------------------------------
:
Bertha A. Lamme

Gender:
Female

Birth Place:
Clark, Ohio

Birth Date:
24 Dec 1869

Father's Name:
James G. Lamme

Mother's Name:
Sarah Garver

-------------------------------------------------------

Allegheny

James Lamme and Elizabeth Givens(Guivens) had a son, William, born about 1777. I am trying to track down any information on him.

He is not the son of William Lamme Senior who was born about 1747-- This William would have been a brother of James, not his son.

Any information would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Donald, I'd sure like to see this chain if I could. I also have a William in Virginia about that time, with a son John, but no evidence that this family was anywhere other than in Virginia (Augusta, Rockbridge, and Rockingham Counties) for the next several generations. Can you provide information and evidence on William's wive's names? That might help me separate out the names. There are simply too many Williams, Elizabeths, Johns, and James in that area at the same time. Thanks for any help you can offer. Dave Lam

Re: UNKNOWN LAMME NAME

The Lamme Name is a very confusing one-- We have to remember that in the colonial period, not everyone was very literate, including clerks. Names tended to be spelled the way the listener heard them. Thus, we have ancestors who were recorded as "LAM", "LAMB", "LAMBE", AND "LAMME" on different documents, occasionally two spellings for the same person in one document. One of my ancestors used "LAMB", "LAM", and "LAMME" throughout his life, and one of his daughters used "LAMMA". So this is all mixed up, and it is very hard to tell the geographic origin of any specific "LAM", "LAMB", "LAMBE", "LAMME" unless you can find detailed specific shipping records. Saying "My Family is Lamme and therefore we all are descended from the French" may or may not be true-- It is a lot more complicated than that.

Generally speaking, "LAMB" seems to be of English Origin (or sometimes Irish). "LAM" could be English, Dutch, German, or Scotch-Irish (as is my family). "LAMME" has been described as Huegenot French, with many of these immigrants not coming directly from France, but from Northern Ireland, where they had first settled coming out of France, and where they had intermarried to some extent with the Scotch-Irish.

Good luck, but this is a hard nut to crack.
Re: Jesse or Jonathan Lamme, Mercer County KY

An update on what I have on my attempt to prove that William Lamme Sr is the father of Jesse and Jonathan Lamme. Some of this will be of interest to anyone in the William Lamme line, and I'm hoping that getting more people involved will help me to solve the mystery of whether William Sr is truly the father of the two youngest children. At this point, I suspect not - and will focus on William Lamme Jr as a possibility.

My tree is the Cox Family Tree on Ancestry, user hilaurac, where you can see the documents I mention below that I have posted for William Lamme Sr. (and Jesse, Jonathan, Sarah Cunningham Lamme and Jesse's first wife Sarah Cunningham).

1) I can not find a will for William Sr, however I have an estate inventory and estate settlement from Fayette County posted to my tree. The inventory tells us nothing, but the estate settlement mentions many names (also various people owed funds from the estate who are not relatives). Jesse and Jonathan are not mentioned at all in this estate settlement, causing me to believe that he must not be their father. Names mentioned as receiving funds from the estate are:
James Lamme
Mary Cravens
John Bradford
William Dunlap
James Lamme per John Lamme
Samuel Finley
Elizabeth Lamme
Samuel Laird
Nathan Lamme
William Lamme (I suspect this is Wm Lamme Jr, who is now the senior after his father's death)
William Lamme Jr
James Laird
Robert Campbell
William Cochran
James Lamme Jr
William Boggs
Dr Downing
Sheriff
County Clerk
John Francisco
Cash to enclose grave (boy do I want to know where this is!)
Ann Laird
Jane Baird (note that this is Baird instead of Beard)
William Lamme per Nathan Lamme
James Lamme per Reuben Wallace
John Lamme
Jacob ??? (shows that he is a blacksmith, but I can't make out his last name
A listing for "sundry persons" without detailing those people
James Dunn

2)I've found a pre-emption warrant for 400 acres that was assigned to William Lamme in Nov 1779, which puts him in Kentucky earlier than most people previously relate. The county was then known as "Kentucky County", which is written on the document. He is also a signer on a number of petitions to the Virginia legislature before Kentucky became a state.

3) In an earlier post I was searching for proof that Jesse had a first marriage to a Sarah Cunningham, the daughter of Capt Walter Cunningham RWS, formerly of Augusta County VA, later settling in Jessamine County, KY. In Jesse's will there is a bequest in the estate settlement to Winfrey Price, who was the husband of Sarah Cunningham Lamme. This is proof that Sarah Cunningham Lamme WAS the daughter of Jesse's from his first marriage to Sarah Cunningham, as all the other bequests are to family members. Jesse's son Jefferson who was the bondsman on many of his sister's marriages was also the bondsman for the marriage of Sarah Cunningham Lamme to Winfrey Ebenezer Price.

Hoping this information helps people, but also VERY INTERESTED in hearing from anyone who may have further information to help me determine the parents of Jonathan and Jesse - or have information on Jesse's first marriage to Sarah Cunningham.
Re: James Lamme

In case anyone is interested in the Jesse Lamme born about 1772 mentioned in the previous post, I've finally been able to uncover some proof I was looking for and wanted to share.

Jesse had a first marriage to Sarah Cunningham, daughter of Capt Walter Cunningham of Augusta County VA, later settled in Jessamine County Kentucky. Jesse and Sarah's daughter Sarah Cunningham Lamme was mentioned in Walter Cunningham's will of 1808 and was the only grandchild mentioned. I had been unable to find proof of the relation between Sarah Cunningham Lamme and Jesse Lamme until recently. Jesse's son Jefferson Lamme (son of his 2nd marriage to Jane Tilford) posted bond for Sarah Cunningham Lamme's marriage to Winfrey Ebenezer Price in Fayette County. Jefferson posted bonds for many of his sister's marriages.

In Jesse's estate settlement documents, I found where Sarah Cunningham Lamme's husband Winfrey was listed as receiving funds from Jesse Lamme's estate, which seems to solidify this proof. If anyone runs across anything for Jesse, his 1st wife Sarah Cunningham or their daughter Sarah Cunningham Lamme that helps to define or further prove this relation, I would appreciate sharing information with you!

Re: Milton Lamme/Lamb

My family is in possession of all tellegrams related to his injury, no exact date of death can be established but the last information ever found about him is as follows. (pardon the copy paste formatting)

I do know from correspondence we have that Byrons family cared for Milton until death, and the scarcity of information about him is because most are looking for information on Milton, when he was most commonly known as Bud even in legal texts. The second reason was that Susan and Tilford had a run of illness that killed almost the entire family, the rest being orphaned out.

Newcastle News Journal
Jan 16, 1903
Milton Lamb, a sheepherder in the employ of W. H. Minter
at Upton, had both his feet frozen last Saturday. He was brought to
this city for medical aid and is under the care of the doctors at the
Newcastle house.
Newcastle News Journal
Jan 30, 1903 Friday
Feet Amputated.
Wednesday evening Dr. Horton amputated both feet of Bud
Lamb, the unfortunate sheepherder who had them severely frozen some
three weeks ago. The operation was a successful one and the patient is
getting along nicely at this writing. The limbs were amputated above
the shoe tops.
The Laclede Blade
Saturday Feb 7, 1903
Front Page, Col 6 part way down
Loses Both Feet
Byron Lamme has received word that his brother, Milton,
generally known here as "Bud", had the misfortune to get both his feet
frozen on January 10 and in an effort to save his life both members
were amputated just below the knees last week. He is in Wyoming. Mr.
Lamme expects to leave for Wyoming in a few days and bring his brother
home as soon as he is able to come.
News Letter Journal - Newcastel, Wyoming
March 13, 1903
Milton Lamb the unfortunate sheepherder who had both feet frozen
and amputated, was sent to LaClede, MO. Wednesday evening, where he
will visit with a brother. "Bud" went away feeling "mighty fine"
notwithstanding the hardships and trying times he has had within the
past two months.
The Laclede Blade
Saturday March 21, 1903
Front Page, Center Col bottom
Milton Lamme, who had the misfortune to lose his feet from
freezing, arrived here from Wyoming last week and is now being cared
for at the home of his brother, Byron, north of town. The wounds are
said to be healing nicely and he is otherwise enjoying good health.

Can you trace your McJilton family to Bethel Township, Clark County, Ohio? A McJilton descendant brought to my attention that her grandmother McJilton and my grandmother, a Lamme descendant, were 'best' friends in high school in the 1870-1880s. Her McJiltons lived across our back fence and the Lamme family lived on an adjoining farm. The Wallace and Lamme families intermarried in the early 1800s, moved to Ohio from Virginia, settled on adjoining farms and have been a presence in the community since. Associated families did move to Kansas from this community in the 1800s. If you can trace your McJilton family to this community, you may be able to esttablish a connection.

Lamme Cunningham Price

I'm seeking the father of Sarah Cunningham Lamme. Her grandfather was Capt. Walter Cunningham (1740-1808) of Augusta County, later of Jessamine County. Sarah Cunningham Lamme (1798-1896) was mentioned in Walter's will (some transcriptions of the will incorrectly identify her last name as Lamine or Lemine). Her mother was Walter's daughter Sarah Cunningham (1707-1807).

I suspect that Sarah Cunningham Lamme lost both parents at a fairly early age. She is the only grandchild of Walter Cunningham that is mentioned in his will. Many online trees just show "Samuel" as her father, but I think that is based on assumption because of the mention of Samuel Lamme as a surveyor in the will. I think the will refers to Samuel Lamme who is well-documented in Harrison County KY.

Sarah Cunningham Lamme married Walter Cunningham Price, son of Winfrey Ebenezer Price and grandson of William Price of Jessamine County.

If you have information on which Lamme Sarah married, I'd love to hear from you.
Payette Independent
Payette, Idaho
Thursday, July 2, 1903

Enjoyable Family Reunion.

D. S. Lamme, the well known Payette pioneer, who departed for Everett, Wash., to visit relatives, June 2, writes that he expects to be home again July 2 (today). He states that he has seen much of Washington but the Payette Valley has lost nothing by comparison. The following from the Everett Harold will be of interest:

Mr. David Lamme of Payette, Idaho, Mr. and Mrs. Willam Lamme of Elmo, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. John Lamme of Salem, Ore. are guest at the home of Mrs. N. M. Ryal, 3605 Broadway. The gentleman, who are bothers of Mrs. Ryal, had not met for thirty-nine years, and the family reunion is enjoyed by all.

Mary, you mentioned in another message that Mary Davis Lamme, wife of William Lamme and mother of Avis Lamme Depew, died 12/17/1956 in Farber, Mo. My siblings this past weekend visited the Farber, Mo. cemetery and did not find a gravestone. Since William died in Urich and was cremated there, I am curious why his widow would return to Farber, Mo. Farber in 1956 had a population of about 300 and my home town 3 times away was only 2000; everyone knew everyone and we just can't understand why we would not have been aware of Mary Lamme's death in Farber.
Agnes Lamme b. Scotland/Ireland

My GGGfather William KIRKLAND and wife Agnes emigrated to Canada from Scotland c. 1850's and later moved on to the US. Enumerated 1870 and 1880 census of NY with William stating b. Scotland and Agnes his wife being born in Ireland and also Scotland. On a website of Scotland I found a marriage between a William KIRKLAND and Agnes LAMME in the right time frame and I am thinking this was my GGGparents. They were in Lanark Co., Can where my GGfather John KIRKLAND was born late 1850's then removed to upstate NY. Does anyone have any info on Agnes LAMME KIRKLAND? Thank you.

If not, I'd like to work with you to see what connection might be made. I do know of a Lamme family of this line that moved to Texas from Kentucky before the Mexican War.

Don Wallace
So you are a descendant of Margaret Lamme? Where was Margaret reared and by whom?
I am a descendant of Allen Gillispie Lamme. He was my grandfather.
I don't know about any six farms. I know that my grandfather got an inherience according to my mom so I would think that if there was a farm, it was sold. There is the original Lamme homestead. Our Tilford was the son of Milton. I don't know about two brothers named Tilford and Milton. Nor a daughter Vinita. Perhaps the daughter was named Margaret Vinita. I am very interested in the story. My brother has a copy of Tilford or Milton Lamme's will. I have not seen it. I think it was Vicki that sent it to him.
I would appreciate posting to this message board since there are many Lamme's interested in the Lamme's history. I knew nothing about them until Vicki answered a query. I was not even sure where my grandfather was buried. I have since found his gravesite. He has A.G. Lamme on his tombstone. He is buried in Austin, Texas cemetry about two blocks off of IH35 and 15-19 Street. His wife, Molly Daisy Harris Lamme is buried beside him. I went to her funeral but was very upset so I did not notice the gravestone beside it. He also has a son, William Henry Lamme and a Grandson ,Roland Lamme, buried in the same cemetry. Please reply to this board so we can all learn about our common ancestors. My maiden name is Lamme.

Yes, William Henry Lamme, Jr. is Billy Lamme. He was my cousin. My father, Tony, kept up with Billy. I did not even know when he passed away.
Roland was killed in California when his jeep ran off a mountain road according to family.
The name William Henry came from Mollie Harris Lamme's father. His name was William Henry Harris. I never knew A.G. since he died before I was born. Grandma Lamme died when I was eighteen years old. I remember her well.
Mollie Harris was born in East Texas. A.G. was born in Missouri.

Tom, several of the Lamme brothers fought in the Revolutionary War. These include Samuel, Nathan and James. Likely siblings William and Robert also fought in that war. One sister, Anna, married a Laird who fought alongside Nathan Lamme.

James, Nathan and possiblyWilliam Lamme moved to Ohio. James Lamme settled in Clark Co. and is buried on his farm, still in Lamme ownership.

Nathan Lamme moved to adjoining Greene Co., OH, and was buried there.

Hope this helps a bit.

dkw

Milton Lamme/Lamb

Am looking for information on Milton Lamme born Linn County, MO 1867, the son of Tilford and Sue Garrett Lamme. The family has in their possession a telegram from New Castle, WY from Dr. W. C. Fau----- stating, "Milton's recovery doubtful. Both feet amputated above the ankle,,,still delerious." The telegram is not dated. The family story goes that he froze his feet and died from it or complications. It would have been before 1925 because Milton's oldest brother William (my greatgrandfather) died in Jan 1925 and Milton was not listed as a survivor in his obituary. Would like information of any kind on Milton and am willing to share info on his siblings and their descendants.

Re: Milton Lamme/Lamb

Hi Vickie Ross! I was excited to learn of your Query regarding Milton Lamme. I am a granddaughter of VINITA LAMME, THE DAUGHTER OF TILFORD LAMME. I do have information regarding many of the Lammes. I would very much appreciate your E-Mailing me so that I can relate to you information you might be intertested in re: some of the Lammes. Vickie, I would be very grateful to you if you would help me at this time in locating some lands owned by some of the Lammes. Let me quote from a letter that my grandmother, Vinita wrote to me in the 70's about this: "In their family grave plot in La Clede, Mo., they have a beautiful monument which was put up by my grandfather, Tilford Lamme. It is a tall white shaft - made like the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. Around this plot of ground is a nice fence...ornimental. My grandfather Lamme owned 6 big farms near La Clede...one for each of his children." Vinita said that the two Lamme brothers, Tilford and Milton Lamme, came from France to make their home in America and that they were quite wealthy. So far, I cannot find out anything on either of these issues re: lands. PLEASE CONTACT ME AS SOON AS YOU CAN. Thanks so much. I am looking forward to hearing from you. I am quite confident that you and I can share much information on the family. What relation are you to the Lammes, primarily Milton? Take Care, Vickie. Sherry Dianne Yancey.

Re: Mrs. George LAMME (nee TANNER)

Mrs. George Lamme (nee McJilton) was my Grandmother.
Your information regarding the daughter and her husband points to not George, but his brother, William Lamme, wife Mary Davis and only daughter, Avis born in Audrain County 12/29/1898. Avis married John Depew (not Deprew) of Urich, Mo. in 1923. She died 6/28/1996 in Kansas City, Mo.

Perhaps Tanner might be a family name; i.e., Mary Tanner Davis and this is the right family, just the wrong brother?

Mary,
Several wonderful people in Ohio have given me a ton of information on the Lamme family. I will be more than happy to share what I have, but I have had a death in the family this morning and will have to wait until after the holidays to get into my files. If I haven't responded again by mid-January, please email me again to remind me.

Thanks,
Connie

My great grandfather was John Lamme born in OH, Springfield,I believe. Was in 1860 census as being 28 yrs. old. He moved to Hiawatha, KS and was listed in 1900 census, married Agnes (no surname given.) Could this be of any help? Our Lamme family history done in the 1950s, but I do not know how to find a copy of it. My mother uninterested--just added my name and returned to someone in Connersville, IND. where other Lammes resided.
