Deceased Name: Newsman Joe Lamb dies at 66

Joe N. Lamb, a longtime Rockford Register Star reporter and editor who retired in 1999, died unexpectedly Thursday at the age of 66.

Lamb's disarmingly folksy style, born of his Arkansas roots, endeared him to his colleagues and masked his tenacity in going for the information he needed for his stories.

Gary Watson, an executive with the Gannett chain and former reporter, editor and publisher of the Register Star who knew Lamb well, said it "was easy to underestimate him."

Winnebago County State's Attorney Paul Logli said Lamb had a "gift" for doing what it took to get a story without burning bridges with the people he interviewed. Please see 7A
