Francois Lafon of Bristol England & Francois Lafon of Louisiana 1719

I found a Francois Lafon at the French Episcopal church (formerly St. Mark's Chapel), Bristol, England in 1719, his wife died June 1720, daughter Elizabeth died Feb 1719 (less than a year old). He had a son Matthias that was baptized earlier there. This was donated church for French Protestants that closed around 1728. A Francois Lafon came to New France/Louisiana in 1719 from Lyon, FR, he was listed as a "vagabond" - shoemaker. I doube that these two are the same person - and don't know which Francois Lafon came to Virginia and left a record dating 1748 in VA.

I am sorry that it has taken me so long to reply to your letter, but I am a trial and error type guy on the computor. But I do agree that there is a connection somewhere. I have located my grandmothers Grave in the Huffman cementary located out side of Newport, Va. I have found out that my great grandfather Clifton Hill LaFon 2 Jun 1856 to 2 Oct 1927 was born in Simmonsville, Craig Co. Virginia and died in Cabell County, West Virginia. His father was John LaFon 1805-1880. Wife's name was Mary Harless. I talk to a person in the clerk of circuit court and she was able locate the Clifton Hill LaFon and my grandmothers name Ethel Blanch LaFon's names mentioned in the records. But she stated that it would probably require me to make a trip to Crain county and make an appointment with a volunteer taht maintains their old records. HEr name is Diane Givens The Historian for crain county, new casle and the surronding area. Her number is 1-540-864-5004. I have not talked to her as of yet myself. If you are able to obtain any additional information, please contact me email lfarley7@gmail.com Thank you Lloyd Farley

Nice to hear from you Mr. Farley,
The earliest Lafon I have is James b abt 1677 in France. I don't know where in France he was from. Then I go down to Francis I. b abt 1697 in France & died abt 1740 in Essex Co Va. You might want to chec Old Rappahannock County for recoreds of the Lafon's. Good luck in your search.
Ollie

Hi Ollie,

Glad to be of some help. I just got the bright idea to copy/paste the information that was sent to me so that you can have the source! I am certain that my Pitts family is also related to this one, but don't know how. I would appreciate some of your family names that are associated with your Pitts family, so maybe I can connect also. Here is the information that was sent to me by another Pitts researcher:
Atwell Franklin Pitts - settled in New Kent county at the age of fifty years, and owns a small but well situated farm of 50 acres, 25 under cultivation in grain and fruit. He was born in Essex county, Virginia, February 13, 1825, son of Frederic and Sally (Parker) Pitts. He married Susan M. Pitts, who was born in King and Queen county, Virginia, in 1843, a daughter of Henry T. and Nancy (Lafon) Pitts. Their marriage was solemnized in King William county, Virginia, in 1856, and their children were born: Rosa L., September, 1859; Jefferson D., March 29, 1861; Atwell Franklin, Jr., October 5, 1865; Mary E., December 31, 1868. Any mail for A. F. Pitts should be sent to Tunstalls, New Kent county, Virginia.
(Source: Hardestys Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia, H.H.Hardesty, 1884.)
Transcribed by: T.
Trying to find proof of father and grandfather for Francis Lafon I, also known as "The Old Huguenot" or "Francis the Huguenot" (b. abt 1697-d abt 1740 in VA). I've found three family trees that all say his father was James LaFon (b abt 1677) and his grandfather was Rene Lafon (b abt 1657). I've searched all the archives in LAFON-L and LAFFOON_L lists but see no mention of them. Can anyone help?!?!?

I am looking for info Julia Ellen Lafon from Bosque, TX. She was daughter of Frederick, I believe. Many sisters and brothers. She met and marriend a Isaac Newton Abbott, but the mother's name at the time was Baker, I believe.

They had 12 kids and 9 living. Actually moved away to Red River Texas, Bowie Co. around 1883. Most of the children did move away from home, but not far in Texas, so there should be many, many cousins from this side.

Any info would be helpful. I have not been able to connect this fellow. I noticed you had some names in your posts that I find in the same areas as my TN line. It could be a migration pattern of families.

John Lafon Ky Mexican War

I'm doing research about the Mexican War 1846-1848. I have one, possibly two John Lafon's who served in that war. Can anyone help me sort the two out?

John Lafon, Private, Company C, 1st Reg. Ky. Cavalry, June 1846-1847. It appears about Aug 1846 he was transfered out of this regiment to be hired as a civilian doctor by Colonel Marshall and by December 1846 transferred to the U. S. Army as Assistant Surgeon by order of General Butler. Two ages were given on his paper work: age 22 (born 1824) and 29 (born 1817). Company C was raised at Frankfort, Franklin County. Also, Lafon requested his bounty land warrant be sent to him there in September 1847. His middle initial could be W or U, both are seen in his military records. This Lafon was probably at the Battle of Buena Vista, 23 Feb 1847. I believe this is probably John Upshur Lafon found on the internet, but the age isn't correct.

The other John U. Lafon was on the Third Regiment Kentucky Infantry, Field and Staff Muster-in Roll, 20 Oct 1847. No age is given, he joined at Louisville, Jefferson County. He was a citizen physician employed by Colonel Manilus V. Thompson, the Colonel commanding the regiment as Asst. Surgeon.

Does anyone have information that these are two people or one?

Best regards,
Sandy

It's actually A. J. Lafon. I found him in a book at Google Books. It seemed to be a response to a lecture at Translvania University at Lexington in 1836. By the way, those of you who have Lexington, Woodford County, that's incorrect. Lexington is in Fayette County. If anyone finds out who A. J. Lafon is, please let me know. He may have gotten a Law degree from the University.
I am not related to the Lafons.
Sandy

Lafons in Orange County, Indiana circa 1850

I'm researching the Lafon's in Orange County, Indiana, circa 1850. In the 1850 Census in Stamper's Creek Township, living in the home of a John & Sally Dillard are William Lafon; age 24; Ellen Lafon, age 22; and Nicholas Lafon; age 19; all born in Kentucky. My ancestors left Orange County in April of 1851 and settled in Andrew County, and next door Buchanan County, Missouri. A William Lafon married a Lydia Sager in Buchanan County, Missouri in September of 1856, and a Mary E. Lafon married my GG Uncle Isiah Allen Smith in Orange County in Sep of 1850; their children were born in Missouri from 1851-1866. Also a Nicholas Lafon bought land from my GGG GF Jarvis Smith in Andrew County, Missouri in 1873. I believe that William, Ellen (possibly Mary Ellen) and Nicholas are all siblings and hail from Woodford County, Kentucky. I would like to hear from anyone that has any information on these individuals to prove or disprove my theory. Thanks, Peter

Joe,
I came across the following in an old post that I made.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following is what I have on the LaFon family.

Nicholas Alexander LaFon was born Dec. 8, 1829 in Lexington, Woodford County, Kentucky. He married Mary Elizabeth Wilson May 26, 1855 in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana.

Child of Nicholas and Mary:

Morton Barton LaFon. Morton was born Nov 13, 1880 in Harrisonville, Cass County, Missouri, and he died March 1970, Wallace, Shoshone County, Idaho.

Morton married Annie Skalicky December 23,1903 (the daughter of Joseph Skalicky and Barbara Lank). Annie died April 25, 1969.

Morton is my wife's grandfather. Nicholas being her g-grandfather.

I realize that it is not much, but hopefully it will provide a lead or two. If you need anything else, let me know. I have more detailed dates/etc.
