Name change from Lecuyer/Lequier to Cook
Just wondering if any of you have relatives that have changed the name? My g-grandfather changed the family name to cook when he came here from Canada. The name was something like L'quiere (french for cook) My family is not sure of exact name any ideas or suggestions on how I could begin to find this out? Thanks, Bev

Name change from Lecuyer/Lequier to LaQuier
I'm running into the same sort of roadblock in my research. I think maybe LaQuier is derived from L'Ecuyer. No sure though.

Name change from Lecuyer/Lequier to Spooner
L'Ecuyer pronunced with an English accent sound like "La cuillère" meaning "the spoon" in french. I know that some L'Ecuyer change the name to Spooner in the US.
There might be a connection between the meaning of cook and spoon...

Re: Name change from Lecuyer/Lequier to Cook
I think you are on the right path. You just have to factor in Old French which people in Quebec held on to longer than in France. If I am not mistaken quis in old French is Cook.
Just like many of you my family name is Cook and before that it was Liquie (Laquie) and before that L'ecuyer.
Sorry to chime in years later but I guess this should have been my last name!

My grandfather changed L'Ecuyer to Lagoy. L'Ecuyer means "esquire".
