re Griffith Vychan etc., from the manuscript of G. Morris on Ancient Salopian Families Vol. 2 (Fo. 404) in the County Library of Shropshire in Shrewsbury, (written about 1835) "Gruffydd Vychan who became a Knight of Jerusalem originally the Order of the Holy Sepulcre then those remaining they were incorporated with the Knights Hospitallars or Templars then resident in Rhodes and until the French Revolution by which their large estates in that country as well as their cannananderies were plundered and consficated, were continued in respect of Knights of Malta. Gryffydd was Lord of Burgeddin and Grigian Co. Montgomery, both in the borders of Shropshire but generally resided at Cae Howel (a) near(some 3 Km SSW) Kinaston* in Co. Salop, and from his nomadic life, and the name of his seat, was called the Wild Knight of Caehowell."
and "Gruffydd or Griffin Kynaston, also Gruffyd Vychan, in 1313 attest a grant from Hugh Fitz Philip to Highman Abbey of land near Oswestry. Though thus denominated after the English fashion in some instances, by the place of his residence yet his son reverted to the Welsh usage and was personally denominated Philip ab Gruffydd; at the same time it is probable that like his father he was occasionally styled from the place of his residence; one instance of which I have met with, which took place during the life of his father. As Griffin de Kynnerston he attests a grant from John Le Strange the fifth, Lord of Knokyn to Matilda who had been wife of John the Cook of Knokyn (v. Vol 1 p 206)."
Kinaston* (above) now 'Kynaston' is a place, being the junction of three roads. There is a barn and two farm houses! Map ref.: 354.202 on the Ordinance Survey series Sheet 126 - Shrewsbury. It seem that the family served the barons le Strange who were established near the Welsh border and the place name became Anglisied to 'Kynaston' eventually.
That may clear the 'fog'.
