Friends, since I last posted I've located some information about my Kyles in a history of Bell County, Texas. I am now trying to work backwards. According to the "Story of Bell County, Texas," published by the Bell County Historical Commission in 1988 and reprinted in 1998, my gg grandfather, James William Kyle, was born in 1835 in Lynchburg, VA, of Quaker parents. He was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker in Lexington and during the Civil War made caskets and worked in hospitals in Richmond and Washington, where he met the likes of Walt Whitman. He married my great-great grandmother, Margaret Welch Paine, in 1860 and had a total of five children. Mrs. Kyle's younger sister, Sallie Paine, married John Davis, a relative of Jefferson Davis. It is also said that the Kyle's eldest daughter, my great grandmother Mary Hannah (aka "Minnie,") had Robert E Lee as her Sunday School teacher when she was 4 years old, near the end of the war. Mr. and Mrs. Kyle and their children settled in Burnet, Texas, after being burned out by the Yankees during the seige of Richmond. There, my gg grandfather ran a furniture store, bringing his son George into the business eventually. They later moved to Temple, where the Kyles died (James in 1902 and Margaret in 1908) and are buried at Hillcrest Cemetery. I am very interested in more history about this family in Virginia, but would also like to know about the Kyle and Paine parents and siblings, if anyone has that information. Incidentally, there are photos of the Kyles in the history I reference. I have information on ordering the books if anyone wants to do so, or would be glad to send copies of the relevant pages for those who can't afford the $75 for the two-volume set. Thanks, all!

Caroline, my Kyles left Virginia just after the Civil War and headed to Texas. I'm looking for Kyles who lived in Virginia before 1860. I do not see any names in your post that appear familiar and the dates are too late for my group. Sorry I couldn't help, but best of luck to you.

I do not see a Louise listed in the Bell County book as a descendent, but that only covers a couple of generations and all were Texas residents. My great-grandmother's brother George Finley Kyle had 2 sons but I think both died young without leaving heirs. The rest of the Kyle children were daughters or died too young to have kids. That doesn't mean we're not related if your Louise came from Virginia, though. Can you tell me a bit more about her? Louise is a common first name in my family so I wouldn't be surprised if we're cousins!

I noticed your postings and am hoping one of you can help me. I have hit a brick wall in my search for my husband's grandmother's family. She is CORINNE KYLE, born in LYNCHBURG, Va in 1875. We don't know who her parents were and that's what I am hoping to find out. Family story has it that was an only child, her parents died when she was young, and she was raised by "an aunt." She met a young man named Edward Hughes and they married and moved to Philadelphia, where they raised their family. Corinne died in 1933; she and Edward were both buried in Fair View Cemetery, Roanoke, but not with family ... I tried to obtain Corinne's birth certificate from Va. Vital Statistics but was told it does not exist. Any assistance, tips, leads would be greatly appreciated. I recently found out that one of my husband's Northern ancestors was a general for the Union -- so among other things I am hoping to find a Confederate ancestor for my sons as well! Thanks.

Pat, I have very limited information as I have just barely begun research on the Kyle line. My ancestor, James Kyle, was b. in Lynchburg, VA, in 1835 and was a Quaker, which means he served neither the Confederates nor the Union, although he worked in Confederate hospitals in Virginia during the Civil War. He moved to Lexington and was a cabinetmaker's apprentice ca. 1853. He married ca. 1860. His wife, Margaret Welch Paine, was b. ca. 1840 but I know very little about her, other than the fact that she had 2 sisters. The Kyle children -- Sarah, Mary, Robert, George and Katherine -- were all born in Lexington, VA, betw. 1862-1866, except for Katherine, who was born in Glade Springs, VA, in 1872. Shortly after this the Kyles must have moved to Burnet, TX. Sarah never married and became an artist and teacher. Mary had 2 husbands, George Williams, with whom she had 1 son (father and son died shortly after the child was born from illness) and my great grandfather, Albert Bentley, with whom she had 8 children. Robert apparently died young. George married a Leta Harris and had 5 children, but I have no information on their descendents. Katherine aka "Kate" married a Murray Chapman and had one daughter, Margaret, who became a teacher and never married. I have recently obtained some materials from Margaret's estate, but they pertain to the Bentley family and not the Kyles. Given the time frame, it is certainly possible that James Kyle and your ancestor were related, but I don't have data on his siblings or parents, either. Looks like we've hit the same brick wall, but I have only barely started so perhaps together we can turn up items of mutual interest.
