Obituary from the 11 August 1932 edition of the "Stanberry Headlight:" (Stanberry , Gentry County, Missouri)

Maxmillian. C. Kyger well known citizen on the west side of Gentry County died
Tuesday night at 6:00 at the home of his son, Richard Grover Kyger southeast of
Stanberry. Mr. Kyger's death followed a stroke suffered on week ago Tuesday
afternoon in the city park.

Visiting with his friends where he had visited so often, Mr. Kyger
suddenly slumped onto the shoulder of T. J. Holt one of the men with whom he
was visiting. Removed to his son's home, Mr. Kyger failed to rally. At times
members of his family thought there was some sign of improvement in their
father's condition but Monday morning his condition grew worse and he failed
to rally to medical aid. Members of the family and close friends cared for
him tenderly but their efforts were of no avail.

For almost 40 years Mr. Kyger had been a resident of Stanberry and his
friends were legion. To know him was to love him and he numbered his friends
by his acquaintances. He will be missed in this community.

He was the son of Robert and Lydia Huffman Kyger and was born in
Staunton, Virginia on May 30, 1849 being 83 years, 3 months, and 3 days old at
the time of his death.

He spent his early childhood in Virginia but when 16 years of age decided
to leave home and come to Missouri. He first settled in Brunswick but later
moved from there.

He was married to Miss Mary Jane Brooks in April of 1878. For the next
few years Mr. Kyger went West but later tired of that country and came back to
Missouri locating near Guilford. About 40 years ago the family moved to
Stanberry and he had lived there ever since.

Twelve children were born to this union -- 7 of whom are living: Mrs. L.
R. Peterson, Los Angeles, California; Mrs. A. W. Mosley, Mrs. J. R. Mossman,
and Ben B. Kyger, all of Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. L. D. Watkins of
Lebanon, Missouri; R. G. Kyger of Stanberry, and J. W. (Tom) Kyger of
Kaufman, Texas. He also leaves one half-brother, Thomas Kyger of Pauhuska,
Oklahoma.

Mrs. Kyger died in October 1925 and after her death Mr. Kyger went to the
home of his son where he has been a welcome member of the family.

My maternal grandfather was J. W. (Tom) Kyger of Kaufman Texas listed in Maxmillian C. Kyger's obituary. Tom Kyger was named John Wesley Kyger. He changed his first name to Tom, for some reason. He met my maternal grandmother when he was working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. I think they married in 1920. They lived in Jacksonville Texas, where two daughters were born. Julien in 1921, and Betty Sue (my mother) in 1924. Tom Kyger was the City Marshall in Kaufman Texas, and he had a heart attack and died in 1939 when my mother Betty Sue Kyger was 15 years old. I met his sister Mrs. J. R. Mossman when I was a teen. I think her first name was Edith. Paula Peters, daughter of Betty Sue Kyger

The person to whom you are replying won't be able to respond as she passed away some time ago. However, her database including the KYGERs can be found on RootsWeb's WorldConnect -- the database is called LOGANHOLMES and you can access it by typing that name into the search box for accessing a database directly at: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com

Thank you for the information. I have found Robert Kyger's father Peter Kyger b. 1791 Rockingham Co. VA. This would be my Gr. Gr. Great Grandfather, if I calculate that correctly. I have never researched the Kyger's. Paula Coffman Great Grandaughter of Maxmillian C. Kyger

Maggie KYGER MILLER and her cousin Russ KYGER did a lot of research on this particular KYGER line. It is a shame that both are deceased but I know Maggie would appreciate that her WorldConnect tree is still helpful to those researching her family.
