Jacob P Kyger, Rockingham Co VA--why in IA CW Unit??
Does anyone know how Jacob P Kyger, b 21 Jul 1844 in Rockingham Co VA m. Virginia Frances Saufley and died 20 Jul 1909 in Rockingham Co VA came to serve in the civil war in an IOWA unit?
Both the roster and his pension application (and that of Virginia F) indicate he served in the IA 35th Infantry Co G, enlisting 15 Aug 1862 with his residence listed as Muscatine Co IA. He was mustered out on 10 Aug 1865 in Davenport, Scott Co, IA.
What little I have found on this man indicate that he was married in Rockingham Co and that his children were all born there.
Any clues to how he ended up in a unit so far from home, or where this man is buried?
I am NOT researching KYGER specifically--I am researching the men who served in Muscatine Co Civil War units and where they are buried and sure am confused with this gentleman.

Jacob Pirkey Kyger was an abolutionist.
He was at the capture of Vicksburg, on the Red River Expedition, the Price Raid Expedition, the Battle of Nashville and the Capture of Mobile.
He married Virginia Frances Saufley January 29, 1867 in Rockingham County, Virginia.
My notes state he was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, McGaheysville, Rockingham County, Virginia. I assume his wife was also buried there.
One of his sons, Minor Ellsworth Kyger, spent much of his life gathering family history. Minor's son, Dr. Minor Ellsworth Kyger, Jr., continued this tradition.
Dr. Kyger's research is now on file at the Alexander Mack Memorial Library, Bridgewater College, 402 East College Street, Bridgewater, Rockingham County, Virginia.

Re: Jacob P Kyger, Rockingham Co VA--why in IA CW Unit??
Thank you for the information--much appreciated. I still wonder why he went so far from VA to enlist..did he have relatives in the IA area or something that would cause him to be in Muscatine?
I will certainly contact the library and thank you very much for passing on the address--perhaps his son's records would give a clue how this man ended up serving from IA. Usually if I find a guy who was not from the area in a unit, it turns out he has a relative or friend who was.
And thank you VERY much for the cemetery name. I have over 3200 Muscatine IA area men to research and each man can take a tremendous amount of time to locate a burial on. So far I have found the final resting place of 1716 of them, but it has taken me over 6 years to do so.

Susan,
Your email address does not show when I click on your name, so cannot contact you personally. My email address does show (click on my name).
Received an interesting email from a cousin on this subject which I do not feel at liberty to post without his permission.
Interesting that both of Jacob Pirkey Kyger's brothers, John St. Clair Kyger and William Franklin Kyger, fought on the Southern side in the Civil War. In fact, John St. Clair Kyger died in a prisoner of war camp in Indiana.
Looking at my notes for John St. Clair Kyger, I found that Alexander Hamilton Pirkey (not sure of the relationship to Jacob Pirkey Kyger) wrote to a cousin in Iowa about the death of John St. Clair Kyger.
So, you are right about the Iowa relative connection.
There are a couple of publications (probably written by Dr. Minor Ellsworth Kyger, Jr.) that you might be able to access about Jacob Pirkey Kyger.

Re: Jacob P Kyger, Rockingham Co VA--why in IA CW Unit??
Jacob tried to join the Union forces in Ohio, but was turned down because of his young age (so he must have tried to enlist very early in the confrontation). So he went to Iowa where he didn't have a lot of history, and lied about his age to join the Union forces.

Dear Saundra I just saw your posting. My great Grandfather was Henry Kyger Kirkpatrick, born in Ottumwa Iowa. He and his younger brother served in t he Civil War, enlisted just after Gettysburg (not only were the casualties horrendou, the 3 year enlistsments etc were running out and the Union needed soldiers. Young Daniel was 17 and evidently kille at the Battle of Marss Mill, Arkansas while my grandfather, who had b een previously rejected twice when volunteering, was captured by the confederates and sent to the prison camp in Tyler Texas. Apart of the Kyger family lived in Iowa, the Kygers were related in fact I believe my great-great grandfather may have married a second cousine [Kyger}
I assume a young cousin just crossed over from Ohio {where my g-g-grandddad emigrated from to Iowa in the year following the Back Howk War) It makes sense at some pont your ancestor just moved to Iowa. Iowa provided more volunteers to the Union and suffered more deaths visavis population than any other of the Union States. That's why they are now known as the Volunteer State. Let me know if you get this. Betty Kirkpatrick Hart
