Looking for Kwilas

Surnames: kwilas, kwilos, kwilasz, kwilosz
Have started researching family tree for Kwilas. My relatives are in Chicagoland area. Have found the name in Michigan and Ohio. Ellis Island site has a reference to a Kwilas going to Buffalo NY.

In researching the name there seems to be interpretation errors when looking at handwriting. Kwilos seems to be a common mistake where someone says it is kwilas. There are Kwilasz and Kwilosz names also.

Sometimes marriage certificates have 'as' and death certificates have 'os'.

Until I get back to researching the names in the old country, it will be difficult to tie them all together.

Anyone running across Kwilas, I would like to hear what you have found.

Hi Lidia,

Thanks for responding. I have cousins in Chicago whose last name is Zajac. Their great grandfather married a Kwilas in Poland.

My mother said that my grandfather came from Kracow. I must go to govenment files to see where he really came from. My grandfather became a naturalized american citizen. when he did, he had to fill out where he was born and who his father and mother was.

My last name may very well be Kwilasz. When Polish people came to america, sometimes letters were dropped from the name such as the "z".

Recently I was sent an email with the following information...

"Most likely the real version would be KWILOSZ. That is the only version that is currently used in Poland. There are approx 141 families using this spellings as of 1990, according to Fred Hoffmans book "Polish Surnames"."

Are there many families in Poland with a last name of "Kwilasz"?

I never learned Polish and my German is nicht zu gut?

Kenn

Hi -
I come from a long line of Kwilos's from the Buffalo area.
Actually, most of the Kwilos family lives in Angola, Gowanda, Hamburg and East Eden, NY. ( Leonard, Stanley, Walter, David, etc)
Please contact me as one of our relatives on the Kwilos side has done extensive research on our family geneology.

Hi,

I am from the Buffalo area originally. I have noticed the Kwilos and Kwilosz names in the Chicago area and wondered if they are related. My mother thinks so but is not sure how. It's funny how people have mispronounced my name like you would spell Kwilas but I never thought of possibly spelling it that way. I have researched Ellis Island and think I found my Great-Grandparents records and also think I know the region of Poland where they came from. If you like we could compare notes etc. Send me an email to let me know.

Enjoy,
Gary

My family names are Godlewski, Pyznar and Szewczyk. In the Godlewski family there is a Stanley Skonieczny married to Kathryn Kwilas on 10/01/1905 in Chicago, St. Joseph Church.
Then there is another entry for Kathryn Kwilas married to Peter Trojan 06/19/15 at St. John Cantius Church in Chicago. I don't know if they are the same Kathryn, mabe Stanley died. If you have any info please send a message. Thanks in advance.

Barb,

That Kathryn Kwilas is not one of my immediate relatives. However, I have taken on the task of trying to do a master tree for the Kwilas surname. Kwilas is not a common name. I have even made contact with Kwilas people in Poland. I suspect that we (kwilas) are all related somewhere in the past 200 yrs.

I too have seen the marriage entries. They are recorded in the Marriage Index For Polish Parishes in Chicago through 1915. See WWW.PGSA.org for database.

In the listing, it lists the Microfilm number of a document filmed by the Mormon Family History folks. Last week I sent for a copy of the microfilm to see if there is any more information to be gleened. It has arrived and I shall be going to their history center this wed. nite (11 Feb 2004) to view it. If I find anything I shall let you know.

I do thank you for letting me know it is in your tree. That adds a piece to the puzzle.

You can contact me directly at kwkwilas@yahoo.com

Cheers,

Kenn
