Dr. Donald L. Kweder 81, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, October 4, 2009.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio (Cuyahoga County) on June 13, 1928, the son of Helen and Victor Kweder.

Always an outstanding student, "Don" was class valedictorian of St. George's Catholic School and the school's youth spelling bee champion.
In high school he became interested in the sport of fencing, later becoming a nationally acclaimed fencer and alternate on the 1948 Olympic Fencing Team.

Don began college at age 16 at Western Reserve in Cleveland and graduated Cum Laude in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa.

He later graduated from the Ohio State University School of Optometry placing 3rd in his State Board Exam.

From 1954 to 1994 Don had successful optometry practices in Cleveland, Ohio, Niles and Youngstown, Ohio.

After 40 years of dedication to his profession, Don retired to enjoy his many passions with his wife, Jan.

His interests included the love of Cleveland area sports teams (the Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers), as well as enjoying playing golf, tennis, bowling and billiards. He was a fan of opera, theatre productions and was an avid reader, studying philosophy, politics, and religion.

Don and his wife of 53 years also enjoyed traveling the country together.

Don was an active sponsor of Children's International Relief Services, the Guiding Eyes for the Blind and other charitable organizations.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Kweder, of Indianapolis; sons, Jeffrey (Julie) Kweder, of Carmel, and David (Kathy) Kweder, of Long Branch, NJ; grandchildren, Jaclyn, Ashley, Andrew, and Joseph Kweder; step grandchildren, Peter, Caitlyn and Kevin Gray; sister, Bertha Durbin, and niece, Patricia Barry.

A memorial calling for Don will be held on Thursday, October 8, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center - Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Dr, Carmel, Indiana.
A private service for family will follow.

A memorial service celebrating Don's life will be held at a later date in Cleveland, Ohio.
