There were sons of Ole and Marie Kvistad, Robert, Hetman, and Clark, living in Bellingham. Ole came in 1902 from Kvistad on Inderoy, Nord Trondelag Norway, to Halstad, Mn and moved to Bellingham in 1935. I do not know if there is a relationship between your query and Ole, other than they both resided in Bellingham, WA

Thank you for the information on Ole, do you know if he had siblings that came to the US? John Severn West[parents Andreas Kvistad] came to the US at the turn of the century also. He was in Bellingham in 1936 working on a TVA project and he never left. His wife's family was also in Mn and Bellingham but I do not know the time line for migration her name was Inga Skaugset. If we could tie Andreas Kvistad to Ole it would be great. How many Kvistads could there be? Thanks again

Do you have any dates for Andreas Kvistad and Inga Skaugset? If you have Internet access try the Digital Archive of Norway: http://www.digitalarkivet.uib.no/By clicking on the US flag you can search in English - Census for Nord Trondelag, Inderoen Parish, and Kvistad and Skogseth farms. I did some looking this morning, but without a birth date for Andreas and Inga, not sure if I have the right one. Larry Thompson

I have the following information on John Severn West and Ingeborg Skaugset. John was born to Andreas Kvistad and Karoline Johnsen on 8/2/1878. Ingeborg was born to Lorento M. Skaugset and Janetta Johnsen on 7/28/1880. both I believe were born in Norway. John came to the US some where around 1902 at the age of 24 and was in Bellingham in 1936.I do not know why the name changed except that it is possiable that john and Inge were 1st cousins, and they changed to avoid any family problems. I had trouble getting to the Norway site you gave. thanks, how are you related to Kvistad's?

In response to Larry Thompson's information about Ole Marie Kvistad's family; There were five sons named Oscar, Hetman (my father), Clark, Robert and Leroy. Today the only ones alive are Clark and Leroy. Hetman served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European campaign and died in November 1994. He is survived by his wife Sally Grace Edmonds Kvistad, Daughters Letha Kvistad Hartley and Robin Kvistad Morrison, son Russell Hetman Kvistad who also has a son named Raynor Sculley Kvistad born 11-07-00. Russell and his family along with his sisters and their families live in Tifton, GA.

Thanks for your information. Do you know anything about Ole Kvistad - parent's name, siblings, when he immigrated to America? By looking at the Kvistad name on the message board, can you help the original query about Andreas Kvistad, or his son, John Severn West?

Larry: You may be in luck. As I have previously indicated, Ole Kvistad is my Grandfather. Although I can barely remember him from when I was only a young child, I have some information concerning him and more importantly I have a family tree that my Aunt Charlotte Kvistad obtained during her visit to Norway a few years ago.
We are fairly certain that Ole did not have a Father who claimed him. In other words his mother had him out of wedlock. Ole was bonded out when he was young and the story goes that he left Norway somewhat of a bitter young man having served as a slave. I hope that I'm not adding information here that's not correct but as far as I know it is correct.
Let me do some checking with my Uncle Leroy who is declining in health as we speak. He lives in Bellingham today along with his other brother Clark.
By the way, the family tree that I have shows Ole's ancestry as far back as 1600! My only problem is that I Don't understand the Norwegian language and that's the way this tree is hand-written. If I could get hold of my Aunt Boog (Charlette), I might be able to obtain some very valuable information and contacts concerning all this. She is my Uncle Robert's wife who passed away before my father.
