My family is from the same area in Norway. I never heard of the Jewish part though. When I lived there I related a story about my grandfather who immigrated in 1911. Some in my home town of Forest City did not think he looked too Norwegian. He had jet black hair (it never grayed all his 92 years) and olive colored skin. He used to joke that Vikings went to Spain and brought back Spanish women from their rades. Many people in the outlying community of Selje-Vågsøy are dark complected. After I related this story someone told me that the true reason was that in the middle ages Portugese fishermen came north to fish in the rich Norwegian waters and stayed. Who knows how correct this is but it may explain that perhaps some were persecuted Jews leaving the pogroms of Issabella and Ferdinand. Good luck on your research. david Strømmen
