Kvaale is short for Kvaalesmo. In Orkedalen, Norway on October 22nd, 1812, Lars Olson Kvaalesmo was born. He married Anne ? who was born in August, 1814. They had one son, Ole, on December 22nd, 1842. A daughter; Eli, on February 14th, 1846, a daughter; Gertrude, born on March 20th, 1849; and Olava was born on February 10th, 1853. All in Orkedalen, Norway.
Ole thought the name Kvaalesmo was too long and shortened it to Kvaale. Today it is spelled Quall.
In 18??, Ole married Marit Knudta-Datter Ofstad, born in 1850, and they had five sons; Lars, Knute, Martin, Peder and Ole Jr, and two daughters; Anna and Marie.
Eli married Ole Stene on July 28, 1872 and they had thirteen children. Six of which died in childhood. Inga Louise, John, Louis, Ole, Karen, Marie and Olina grew to adulthood.
Olava married Johan Jamtgaard and had four sons; Ludvig, Ole, Peter and Lewis, and seven daughters; Betsey, Sophie, Louisa, Olina, Karen, Lillie and Josie.
Gertrude remained in Norway and married Joe Buum. They had nine sons; Johan, Lars, Bernt, Rasmus, Martin, Jon, Lars the 2nd, Christian and Ole; and one daughter; Marie who died at ten months.
Ole, Eli, Olava and Gertrude all came to Union County, South Dakota to establish their homes. Their father, Lars, passed in 1885.
Ole passed in 1912. His wife Marit; unknown.
Eli passed on April 21, 1930. Her husband Ole Stene, March 14, 1897.
Olava died in 1930. Her husband Johan Jantgaard, unknown.
Gertrude died in 1914. Her husband, Joe buum, unknown.
They are all resting in the "Roseni" cemetary, ten miles south of Beresford, South Dakota.

I thank you for your responce to my request. It is interesting.
I have Kvaale in my ancestry going back to
1256. Is there a connection? Probably. I will do
more research. Thanks again....Joyce

I would like to get some additional information on the Jamtgaard part of the family history that you provided

Hello,
I saw your message that you had posted on ancestry.com about the Kvaale family and was very interested in it. I live about 5 miles south of Roseni cemetery of rural Beresford, South Dakota. I went to the cemetery this morning to find dates of the people you had mentioned in your message.

The way the grave stones are in the cemetery, it looks like Gertrude married John R Buum, Sr not Joe Buum.
Gertrude Birth: 03/20/1849
Death: 07/06/1914
John R Buum, Sr Birth: 05/26/1847
Death: 05/14/1920
Jon (Son) Birth: 1884
Death: 1931
Bernt "Ben" (Son) Birth: 1878-1962 He married Inga H Hansen (1885-1971)
Martin J Buum (Son) Birth: 07/29/1875
Death: 09/15/1910

Ole (stone has last name as Qvaale) 1842-1912
Marit 1850-1942
Their son Peder (stone has Peter) was born on 03/04/1887; died 08/05/1859; South Dakota SGT US Marine Corps WW I. He married Effie (last name unknown) 1891-1911

Olava Birth: 02/10/1853
Death: 06/20/1930
Johan Jamtgaard Birth: 06/30/1849
Death: 07/29/1935

I haven't located Eli and Ole's yet in the cemetery, but I will keep looking and let you know what I find if you want. There is also a Lars Qvaale, Beret Qvaale, another Peter Qvaale, Dina Quall, and a Knud Quall at the cemetery that I haven't found but I will find them too. I don't know if they fit in somewhere, but I'm guessing that they do.

If you have in information that would be helpful, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you have any questions or anything to add to this family tree, I would love to hear from you. Feel free to email me at tonya6@dtgnet.com anytime.

Thanks and I hope this helps to fill in some missing pieces.
