Greetings Cousins Jim, Ronald and Thiery from Ft. Smith, Ar. where in a 25 mile radius i would dare to say that there are at least 200 of my 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th cousins and when I go farther out the no increases. My two favorites are Nora, 101 years old. I can listen to her stories, hour upon hour of my direct k bloodline. My g.g.g.grandfather settled here in the 1840's. Cousin Lois, 93, is the other cousin and each of them have their minds in tact. Lois has been writing a newsletter for a local newspaper since 1940 and this has been during her years as a school teacher. In my lifetime (66) I have had contack with K's of different spellings and each have told me they believe theyare of Dutch decendent. Thierny, have you ever typed on a Dutch typewriter keyboard? Quykendall, has been the most unusual way I have seen our name spelled. During my 47 years of serious K research I have come to the following conclusion of why the name is spelled with a Y. I feel it may hhave come about depending on the education in the early years of our forefathers when they were driven out of New Amsterdam by the British ca. 1653, and also when they starting connecting words together in what we call "long hand writing", thus, after a period of time the two "dots" above the Y is being left off. My g.g.grandfather, James and his brother, John, never learn to write or read. This is verified by docoments of personal information from penion charts of service in the Union Army. James begin getting this pension in 1901 and it ended on his death in 1907. Each of the forms are signed with a X. Brothers, John and Peter were also in the Union Army, but brothe, Burrell B., Confederate Army. All survivored and lived into their golden years. Notice the spelling of my name and I pronounce it Kirk-kin-doll. John and his decendents continued spelling the name in this manner. I have a hard-headed 3rd cousin, 1-r, that has been searching for his g.g.g.grandfather, John Kirkendall all his life (68), he won't accept the word of his cousins that know about the spelling. I wish him good luck at times. In my resarch, two brothers, Jacob and Urbanus Luyersen(Luijersen) came to America ca 1645. At the end of this message I will post a way each can contact living cousins. Our family follows the Jacob, because Urbanus drowns in a ship wreck. Jacob dies as a young man, but not before he sires a son, Luer Jacobsen. I want to believe that he will want to have a hand in a lot public affairs. Maybe his mother, Stintje (Douwes) insisted he learn his letters and numbers, in maybe the manner that my g.g. grandfather, James made his two sons, my g.grandfther, Lorenzo Dow, 1852-1931 AND James William. Lorenzo taught school for 38 years in Crawford and Polk Co., AR. James was Superintendent of Ft Smith Schools during the years 1905-1915. Two of Lorenzo's sons, James H. and CC may have spent their early years following the path of their g.g. and g.g.g.grandfathers, (avoiding the schoolhouse, and spending their time on the Arkansas River and hunting in the woods surrounding Ft, Smith. Each of their marriage license has a note from Lorenzo authorizing his permission to marry in 1895 and 1897 and the licenses are signed with a X. My grandfather, William Robert, 1878-1929, did go to school and din't marry until he was 21, and for a male, his signature on the license is quite, beautiful. Now. back to Luer Jacobsen. He and Grietje Artse Tack or Took will sire a recorded 11 children, 6 bys and 5 girls. Five of the last children will be born in Minisink NY (present day Port Jervis, NY) It is believed by present day Kuykendalls that we are all decendented from the six males, Jacob, Johannes,Cornelius(my g.g.g.g.g.g.grandfather), Mattheus(Matthew), Artie and Pieter(Peter) On several K websites, I'm in contact with decendents of each of the boys, and I believe in the near future, that more and more of older K's will discover the wonderful world of computors and will be able to funish more and correct informatiom. I put my fingers on one July 10th 2000, previous to that time I had spent years traveling the USA, searching cemeteries, courthouses and libaries and visiting and phoning K's, and alot of them would be older than me. Unti later, you K cuz.
