My grandfather was W. A. Kuyken, born in Haarlem, Holland and moved to Grand Rapids, MI about 1918 and later moved to Sout Jersey. I would like to know any information on the unusual surname Kuyken and the family. I know there are still distant relatives in Holland living in the Haarlem area.

I would like any information that anyone could give me on the Kuyken Family.

What sort of information would you like? This is a very uncommon surname. My grandfather, William Andres, was born in Haarlem, Holland, and at the age of ten in 1918, with his two younger sisters and parents moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. They then moved to South Jersey, and the small family has been in this area since. What information do you have?

Hi, We are probably from the same familly. Some professor in history married to a Kuyken made a genealogy three of the familly and went back to the 1600s. He situated our oldest ancestor in Harlem, Holland (close to Amsterdam) and found many members of the familly all over the world (US, France, Belgium, Sweden, UK, ...). Unfortunatelly he died some years ago and I don't have a copy of this document. My own grand father moved in the early 1920 from Holland to Brussels where I live today. I think that his father lived there and had a factory in the city of Harlem. You are right when you say that this name is not common. I don't know any people who's name is kuyken that is not from our familly. I can also tell you that a part of the familly has changed a little bit the spelling to Kuijken (it is the new flamich spelling as the lettre Y does not exist anymore in this language). SO if you tell me the full first name of your grand father and of his father (and all information you could have) I will try to know for sure who he could be and if we are some how related.

Thierry,
Can you let me have any information you have on the family tree? I go back to a Cornelis Davit Kuyken who was probably born in the late 1600's. He married a Grietje Ib Smit who died in 1784 and they had the following children: Jacob Kuyken born 1704, Aafi Kuyken, born and died 1757, Aaffi Kuyken, born and died 1759, Trijntje Kuyken born and died 1759, Trijntje Kuyken born 1763, died 1808, and Davit Kuyken born March 1st 1768, died april 14 1837. I then follow the line down through Davit Kuyken. The information all came from the family bible so apart from the birth and death dates, I know very little about the earlier generations, so anything you can pass my way would be gratefully received.

Geachte naamgenoot,
Groet,
Richard Kuiken

Unfortunately, I do not understand the language in which you write, but my family's name, as I have recently learned was changed from the Dutch spelling of Kuijken to Kuyken when immigrating from Holland to the United States in approximately 1918. My grandfather, William Andres was the oldest child and only son of Frank Kuyken (Kuijken) and Dina (Dirks) Kuyken. My grandfather spoke of an uncle in Holland, his namesake, William or Wilhelmus Kuijken. The family was last living in Harlem prior to coming to the United States and settling in Grand Rapids, MI and later settling in Woodlyne, Medford Lakes and finally in Mount Laurel, NJ. My grandfather passed away in April of 1999 and my grandmother, his wife, Mary Ann (Krajewski) Kuyken passed in February of 2003. My grandfather was survived by one sister, Marie (Kuyken) Flood and was predeceased by a sister Joanna (Kuyken) LaBarr. If this information fits with any that anyone else possesses, I would love to hear more. Thanks!

Frans Kuijken was one of the nine children from Wilhelmus Andreas Kuijken and Maria Sernee. Wilhelmus Andreas was also one of the children, as well as Frederik (Frits) Christiaan, which was my grandfather. He died young, aged only 28 yrs. I met Frans only shortly when he was visiting my grandmother Maria le Noble. I received once a copy of a letter your grandfather wrote and in which he gave some information about his family in the USA. I assume you are related either to Rita Marie K., or Mary Ann K. I traced our family back till 1615 with Willem Aerdt Cuijcken. When you are interested to receive more information, please contact me. Regards, Frits Kuijken
