My maiden name, Cushmore, was originally spelled Kushmour in the Penna area. I cannot find the origin of the name, and I am assured that it is not belgian (Flemish), so I am still looking. It could have been Kuschmour. Does anyone know the origin of the surname Kusch? Thanks.

Hi - Happened to see your msg. while looking for my mother's maiden name which was Kuschman or sometimes spelled Kuschmann. All of her Kuschman ancestors settled in the Rock Island, Ill. area and came from Germany. Just thought the info. might give you a lead. Best wishes - Diane Mehok

My mother's maiden name was Kusch. My grandfather was Frederick Kusch (b.Hilsboro, KS 7/19/1885). His father was SAmuel Kusch (b. 5/14/1852). I understand they came from Prussia (Germany now?) during 1880s and settled in Kansas, moving later to Oklahoma. I would love to know more about where they came from because we are going to Germany this summer. Any help?

I don't think we are related. My greatgrandfather spelled his name Kushmour, and I have been grasping at anything resembling this to find this name, but without success. Your trip to Germany sounds interesting. I hope you know the name of the town where your ancestors came from, however. If it was Prussia, this is now mostly in Poland, and to travel there you may need a visa still...worth looking into. The churches are usually the best place to start, as they have the best records. Check out the LDS website at Familysearch.org, if you haven't already, and get as much information as possible before venturing to the old country. Good luck! Joyce Bradley

Ken Frantz --
I am searching for some expanded knowledge of my KUSCH relation and your 8 Jun 2001 note strikes me that you and I may be connected to the same family. My mother was Louise KUSCH, daughter of Edward Karl Kusch b.30 Jul 1887, who was son of Samuel KUSCH, b.26 Mar 1859 in Maria Polar Chris, Russia. My aunt Goldie (dgtr of Edward) still llives in Fairview, OK. Are our families the same? If so, do you have a gedcom you can e-mail? Sadly, I have spent most of my research time on other family strings and am way behind on my Kusch ancestors.

Ken,
Yes, our families are the same. Fred was my grandfather and I know your Aunt Goldie. In fact, we cousins (grandchildren of Fred and Martha Kusch) have a family reunion each spring. This year the reunion was in Fairview and I think your aunt Goldie was there. She was a very special cousin(?) and friend of my mother--Martha (Kusch) Cone. Are you the fellow who lives in Florida and the one who Charles Shipley mentioned to me? Let's talk.

To Don Cone:
Hello, Don. Thank you for responding. I live in Lawrence, Kansas and my mother, Louise Kusch-Pickering was Edward Kusch's daughter and younger sister of Goldie Kusch from Fairview, OK. I understand that you may have done some research over seas and I would be interested in anything you have collected on the Kusch family. I have recently retired and am picking up all my notes which I have made over the years on family history and trying to put them in order. I can share gedcom files or import anything you may be able to send my e-mail. My data comes primarily from my mother and a visit with Goldie Kusch in 1982-83. I also have a note about Samuel Kusch's birth place which I received from Flora Kusch, a cousin with whom I have lost contact who did some Kusch research. I would be tickled to share anything I have and receive anything you can send. My e-mail address is williampic@altavista.com.

You have probably gotten the naswer to your question by now, but I will respond anyway. As far as I know the "Kusch" name had its origins in Prussia, in what is now Poland. My ancestors came from East Prussia in about 1888. They spelled their name at that time as "Kusch"
