Re: Kusch: origin of surname
All of my German friends tell me that 'Kusch' is what people in German tell their dogs to do; basically, an equivalent of 'heel'. I am inclined to believe that someone with the last name 'Kusch' would have been a heeler or someone who worked with dogs.

Re: Kusch: origin of surname
Throughout all my searching for the "meaning" of Kusch, I have found it to be connected with the Prussians. When they were taking over towns during the war, most people in a particular town did not have last names...they were known by the town they lived in. When the Prussians came they assigned names to families who couldn't come up with their own names quick enough. The Prussians assigned degrading names to families, and, unfortunately, assigned "kush" to many of the families....meaning "diaper" in German. The name "Kusch" and "Kush" are both assigned Prussian names. If you look far back enough you will find it for yourself. Sorry.

Re: Kusch: origin of surname
If any one could please offer any info, it would be greatly appreciated. My great great grandfather's name was Ernst Kusch. He lived in St. Louis Missouri and was a tailor. He married a Caroline Heimsoth/ Heimsodt in 1866. he had several children, Sam, Daly, Esther,Emilie, Arthur, Caroline, Ida. He came in 1860? from what he stated on one census as Prussia and another census as Germany?

Hello: Joyce,
I've done some research on the name of Kusch. Try google and see where the name goes to what county. I found that Germany comes up many times. Also our name is Kush. My given name was Kusmierowicz and maybe spelled Kusumavorich Polish spelling. So if you use the sound Kusch mur is how we prononce our first half of our last name KUS-MUR-ROW-VITCH. Check out Google or yahoo for relatives...it's free ! Michael

Re: Kusch: origin of surname
Could the Kusch name be a variation of Kus/Kus? My grandfather's name on his grave was Kus but on his death certificate it said Kusz and from there I can't go back any further as to his father my great grandfather except that his name was John also...
