What was language spoken by your ancestor? The surname seems to be of Slavic roots.

Surnames: Kucserka Sellinger
From what I know they were Hungarian. I don't know too much though. I know they were in New York in 1900 then in CA. I also know the name was changed to Kucserka from Sellinger.

Wonder why they changed the name to KUCSERKA from SELLINGER. One is of Slavic roots and the other German.

This is the map of old Hungary

You need to find an US document which should have a place of birth. No going on with the research without knowing the location that the ancestor came from.

only 28 SELLINGERs came thru Ellis Island. Could one of them be related to your ancestor or be your ancestor?
Maybe the ancestor came thru www.castlegarden.org

There were two brothers My great great grandfather and his brother. His brother kept the Sellinger name and Gr,gr, grandpa took Kucserka. I'm not sure what caused the name change. Then my grandfather changed the name to Jackson after he took I believe his step father's last name.
Ellis Island had my great grandmother listed. Most of the relation has Hungary listed as the country. And that's pretty much all I know. I don't have alot on the history of our family. That is why I'm posting. I hope someone can help fill in the gaps.

I am trying to help with what is available on the internet for free. I can suggest you websites for research but without knowing which one is your great grandmother listed on the Ellis Island site, I can not. Please provide her name. Your great grandmother's US documents should have her place of birthm

Blanche Louise Sellinger was her name when she came over. There was a ships passenger list that said the person she was coming to America to stay with was my Great great grandfather Julius Kucserka. She later married Louis Kucserka my great grandfather.

I do not find a Blanche Louise SELLINGER arriving NY Ellis Island. what year? I really need to see the manifest.

If you say she married Louis KUCSERKA than the church marriage record and state marriage application should have her place of birth and parents names.
