Re: Origin and Meaning of KUNKEL

As Kunkle children (and young adults), we were told that Kunkle was the Americanized version of kungle, which meant "shuttle" (of a loom). In fact, my great grandfather and one of his sons kept the -gle spelling while the rest of the family morphed to -kle/ Can any German scholars/speakers resolve this for us?

Seeking info on: Herman Charles Kunkle and descendants

Herman Charles Kunkle was father to my maternal grandfather Robert H.C. (Herman Charles) Kunkle, but abandoned the family and my grandfather refused to investigate his whereabouts thereafter. I have some possible information--he may have started a family in Allegheny County, PA. Census records point to this IF in fact it is the same Herman Kunkle He seemed to have two more children by the 1940 census (in addition to the two from his first marriage to Helen Amanda Strause Kunkle).

Origin and Meaning of KUNKEL

Years ago I seem to recall having read that the German name 'Kunkel' [may have?] originated from the Latin 'conuncula', which meant I believe 'spindle', as in a spinning wheel..?! Phonetically there is a definite resemblance between the two.. [PIE 0201..] (Latin was widely used in Europe for many centuries)..
Thank you for your response. I am using my grand niece's account which is only good until the end of this month. I'm thinking about joining and wonder what you think about this site. I have previously used Family Tree software and enter the information researched by my father. When he died, I got all his research. What is your opinion of this site?

Please email me at my regular email address "AKonkle@aol.com" and I can send you the information that you are looking for. I do have Jacob Kunkle and his descents in my family tree detail along with locations.

Hello,

I am not sure of the exact date when the surname changed but William Demont Konkle was born 1859 in New York and died in 1923 in Elmira, New York. His father, Jacob Kunkle Jr. was born in 1827 also in New York and died in 1895 in Barton, Ner York.

"In the case of the surname Gunkel, Gunckel, Konkel, Kunkel, Konkle, Kunkle, Cunkle, etc., I believe you will find that Kunkle was the predominant spelling in PA after 1800" -- One of William Konkle's sons, Edson Charles Konkle (my great-great-grandfather) was born in Sarye Pennsylvania in 1879. Edson and his decendants seemed to stay in the Allegheny, Altoona Pennsylvania area which I found out is near about present day Pittsburg.

Is it alright if I send your email to my great uncle so he can get in touch with the researcher of the Kunkle, Konkle surnames? My uncle, Alan, is very interested in this as well.

Thank you for all your help as to why names change and other useful information. I hope the names, dates and locations help and match up with information you have.

-Jennifer Konkle

Hello

In the middle of researching my family history I hit a brick wall. Well, recently I found out why. My 3rd great-grandfather, William Demont Konkle changed his last name. His father Jacob Kunkle Jr. and the rest of his family have the last name of Kunkle where as William has the last name of Konkle.

I am interested in any information that anyone has as to why William Demont changed his last name.

Thank you,
Jennifer

Re: William Demont KONKLE/KUNKLE

Can you say approximately when and where your ancestral Kunkle's surname changed to Konkle? The fact that you mention your Konkle ancestor lived six generations back leads me to assume he was living in the late 18th C. or first half of 19th C. So my following remarks are based on that premise.

Depending upon when the change took place, your ancestor may have had little or nothing to do with the change. During the colonial period, under English law, spelling of personal names was determined by "custom and useage" without resorting to formal legal procedures or regard for sanctions. Even after the independence of the colonies in 1783, name changes were not quickly governed by civil regulations or by making application to courts. For example, in the first generation of the Sulouffs in America, at least a half-dozen spelling changes are found in civil and church records written between 1783 and 1805. Moreover, some of the second-generation Sulouffs in America voluntarily changed their names to Suloff, simply by making arbitrary personal decisions, as late as the 1840-1850 timeframe. I even had an uncle, born in 1913, whose surname was inadvertently changed from Sulouff to Suloff in Army records after 1941 and he lived out the remainder of his life using Suloff for his surname. Bear in mind, surnames were much more fluid in the past than they are today!

I've done considerable research on the surname Kunkle because one of the first-generation Sulouff daughters married a Kunkle, whose name was also spelled Cunkle in contemporary records! In the case of the surname Gunkel, Gunckel, Konkel, Kunkel, Konkle, Kunkle, Cunkle, etc., I believe you will find that Kunkle was the predominant spelling in PA after 1800 and also among those who moved from PA westward across the Ohio River after 1800. Census takers, tax officials, church officials, etc. all had a hand in making changes to spellings of surnames. The most frequent causes for change within a given area of the country appear to have been made (1)to accord with a predominant form, (2) to convert to a simpler form (3) to adjust to an Aglicized form or (4) due to errant transliteration and/or spelling.

I can try to put you in touch with a very accomplished researcher who has assembled exhaustive data on the Kunkle, Konkle, etc. surname. If you wish to have me contact him, please send me an E-mail addressed to zuli@sprintmail.com .

Incidentally, can you tell me the location where your ancestor, Jacob Kunkle, Jr., lived? The Sulouff woman, mentioned above, who married John Kunkle (in the region of Harrisburg PA or in Cumberland Co. or Mifflin Co. PA) had four sons, one of whom was named Jacob and I have not been able to find records about him. It is conceivable that your Jacob Kunkle, Jr. is closely related and I would like to hear from you if you have locational data on your Kunkles.
-Rev. Nelson R. Sulouff

Paul Raymond Kunkle, born,in Youngwood.son of.George P. and Elizabeth (Smith) Kunkle.

Paul R. Kunkle
Youngwood

Paul Raymond "Calhoun" Kunkle, of Youngwood,
passed away Sunday, Feb 5. 2012 , surrounded by his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Excela Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Paul was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Youngwood. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late George P. and Elizabeth (Smith) Kunkle. In addition, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Charlotte E. Kunkle, Suzanna Anderson and Ruth Magill; and two brothers, Clair Kunkle and G. Robert Kunkle. He is survived by one brother, John P. Kunkle and wife, Gerri, of Putny, Vt.; and a sister, Mary Jane Primozic, of Greensburg. Being one of seven children, Paul grew up learning and loving, faith in God, a hard day's work in the family garden and orchard, and a nonstop sense of humor. Paul graduated from Youngwood High School, were he met and would eventually win the heart of Doris M. Heckler, who would become his wife of 68 years. Paul loved playing baseball for Youngwood for years. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 30 Union of Jeannette. Paul was employed by Silvis Farm Dairy, Bergmans Dairy and Westland Dairy. After his retirement, he worked for a few years for Woodard Refuse Inc. in Greensburg. A veteran of World War II, Paul was called to duty without hesitation for service in the Army that took him from basic training at Camp Swift, Texas, to Germany and Japan as an technician fifth class combat engineer for the 97 Division of the 327 Combat Brigade Company. When Paul was "retired," he continued to keep busy replacing roofs, painting, wallpapering and almost every handyman job there was. Not one to sit still, Paul coached in his sons' Little League, attended church and Teamsters meetings and raised his grandson, Jeffrey. Paul and Doris took classes and went dancing every chance they could with their dear friends, Donna and Russell Woodward. Later, church functions and senior citizen events kept them active along with his own garden every year and, of course, his love of Penn State and Steelers football and the Pirates, and passing his knowledge of life, hand craftsmanship, gardening, baseball, football and hard work on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even though Paul's memory faded in the past few years and he could not recall the exact number of years he had been married, he would simply say when asked, "not a day longer than I ever wanted to be." Paul was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris M. (Heckler) Kunkle, who died Feb. 27, 2010. He is survived by four children, Linda D. Hudock, of Largo, Fla., Barry A. Kunkle, of Bethel Park, Ronald P. Kunkle, of Yukon, and Ralph E. Kunkle and wife, Diane, of Hempfield Township; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Norma Bossart and husband, Daniel, of Berlin. Friends will be received to help celebrate Paul's life from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., 101 S. Fourth St., Youngwood, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David S. Jack officiating. Interment to follow at Youngwood Cemetery with military funeral rights accorded by the Armbrust Veterans Association.
((Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh Tribune))

I just emailed you, so this might be a duplicate post. I have seen evidence that you have a baptismal or Bible entry on my ancestors, Jonathan Klose and Eva Kunkle, buried in Harmonsburg, PA. I am descended from their daughter Roseannah, who was a twin. I would love to have copies of any source documentation you have for this line. You have no idea how grateful I am that someone has had the passion for preserving the history of this family! My cousins and I are eternally grateful to you!

You can see my family tree, Quay Family Tree, on Ancestry. If you send me your user name, I'll invite you as a guest.

Has any of your source material been submitted for preservation to the DAR? Would love to help preserve your information there, if not. The DAR allows members and non-members alike to use its facility, with non-members paying only $6/day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your cousin, Anne Beach

Hello,

I'm looking for information on Amber Kunkle (b 1907 - d 1983) from Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. I know very little about her, other than the fact that she's my great-grandmother, and married Lisle Simon Stiffey, Sr.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Hi James..It seems that our James E Kunkle hasn't been making any posts about the Kunkle line in several years and this concerns me because he was very active on the topic of his family history...I spoke to him about 10 years ago and i know he did say he had allot of health issues and this makes me wonder if the worst could have happened to him..I wish one of his loved ones would let us know if that is the case.
I hope I am wrong but I can't imagine why else he would have not been active in his passion in such a long time.
His files for William show the last 2 generations born circa 1920 thru 1950.
No indciations of why the name change. Not as unusual a situation as you might think.
Point of interest for most of the earliest Kunkles. We came here and settled primarily in eastern Berks Co, PA in 1748 from Florsbach, Gelnhausen, Hessen, Germany - about 30 miles east of Frankfurt, Germany
If you wish to contact me, you can click on my name and
see my email address and direct email - cut out the middle man.

Anna KUNKLE (ca. 1870, IL - 1950, NE) m. Wm. LAMBRECHT

Do any of you have any information about Anna KUNKLE who married William LAMBRECHT? Her tombstone on FindaGrave says (1869 - 1950), buried in the City Cem., Schuyler, Colfax Co., NE.

Also of Colfax Co. were Prosper KUNKLE (1867 - 1953) & wf. Mary E. LAMBRECHT (1872, WI - 1939). William & Mary were children of Joseph LAMBRECHT & Eliza BERNINGER, also listed on FindaGrave.

Gazetteer of 1890 shows in Richland Twp., Colfax Co., NE, Andrew KUNKLE, in the same twp. as Joseph & Andrew LAMBRECHT.

In 1900, William LAMBRECHT & Andrew KUNKLE were of Lost Creek Twp., Platte Co., NE.

In Colfax Co., 1920, Andrew KUNKEL, 77, said he was born in Ohio; wf. Eliz., 73, Germany.

Census of 1900, Platte Co., NE, Anna [KUNKLE] LAMBRECHT, 28 [b. 1872?], listed herself & parents all b. IL. In 1870, Prosper was 2, of Marshall Co., IL, but I haven't found anything earlier in Illinois. The Illinois Archives database of marriages doesn't have any KUNKLE that early. Could Anna's parents actually have been born in Ohio?

USGenWeb > NE > Colfax County > Probates > KUNKLE:
Mary, 1936+
Prosper, 1946+
Elmore, 1966+, & Chauncy, 1976+ (sons of Prosper)
Gladys B., 1986+.

There might be an earlier connection. Joseph LAMBRECHT, b. 1841, NY, m. Hannah BERNINGER. RootsWeb has a BERNINGER family including Phillip, b. 18 Sep. 1781, Montgomery Co., PA, who had sons who moved to Wabash Co., IL. However, one of those could have been John, 37 in 1850, of Roaring Creek, Montour Co., PA. That's pretty close to the age of John BERNINGER, b. 29 Oct. 1814, son of Phillip, who married Eliza "KUENKEL."

And, stretching even further :-)

she could be Eliza BERNINGER (2 Nov. 1814 - 25 Sep. 1900), buried with Hannah & Joseph LAMBRECHT, b. 1841, City Cem., Schuyler, Colfax Co., NE.

Do you recognize any clues?
