Looking for Kunaschk from Saxony
I am researching the Kunaschk line that originated from Konigswartha, Saxony and settled in Fond Du Lac, WI. Andrew Kunaschk (1844-1913) arrived via Hamburg-New York in 1884. With him was his wife Ida (Klaus, 1849-1915) and four children: Alfred (b1874), Oscar (b1878), Richard (1879-1947) and Hilda (b1882). Daugther Ella was born in Fond Du Lac in 1887. Son Richard married Anna Jasperson (1880-1971) and they had four children: Harry, Kenneth, Stanley and Margaret (1906-1980), my grandmother. Harry at one time was a boxer known as "Johnny Cooney". With some family branches the final "k" was dropped and the name became just Kunasch. Any information to share regarding the Kunaschk line or how to continue my research into Saxony would be greatly appreciated. It is alleged that the name was "von Kunaschk" back in Saxony but this has not been substantiated.

Re: Looking for Kunaschk from Saxony
I believe your GGF is Alfred M. Kunaschk (B 11 May 1874 in Saxony; D ???). His brother was Richard Paul Kunaschk (B 17 Apr 1879; D 30 May 1947), who is my GGF. Our GGGF is Andrew Kunaschk who was born in Wartha, Hoyerswerda, Saxony on 22 April 1844. Andrew married Ida Klaus (B 19 Jan 1849 in Dresden, Germany; D 22 Aug 1915) and they arrived with their family in New York, from Hamburg, aboard the Australia on 12 May 1884. Accompanying them was their children Alfred, Oscar, Richard and Hilda. They settled in Fond du Lac, WI. Andrew and Ida divorced in 1908. It appears the ending âkâ was dropped from Kunaschk on my side of the family starting with some of the children of Richard Paul.
My records show that Alfred married Eliza J. (B 1883; D 1966) and they had five children: John F., James C. (B 8 Jun 1905; D 26 Aug 1974), Benjamin G., Lester R., and Edna. James C. married Margaret Kulow and they had five children: Bruce, Edmund, Gustave, Melvin, and a daughter (name?). Does that sound familiar? I have a Fond du Lac newspaper clipping for the obituary of James Kunaschk, who died in Phoenix, AZ, and a Memorial Card from his funeral service.
I am trying to research the Kunaschk line back in Saxony. Any family stories and histories from your side that would assist in that endeavor would be greatly appreciated. I was told a story back in the 1970's that the name was once von Kunaschk and our ancestor lost his title when he married a maid (this story could be total fiction). Aunt Hilda said that Andrew was a coachman and Ida was a personal maid back in Saxony.

Re: Looking for Kunaschk from Saxony
Hello Cousin, I am located in Tampa, FL and will send a seperate message on how to contact me directly. Margaret Kunasch, my GM, married Alois Koutsky and they settled in Milwaukee (West Allis), WI. They had three children including my mother. She married my father and we moved to Tampa in 1969. My father travels to Tuscon once a year to visit his brother who winters there. Some interesting side notes: There is a Kunaschk Bentonwerks located some kilometers south of Wartha in Germany ( www.kunaschk.de). Related perhaps? I have several documents from the old country for Andrew Kunaschk. Know anyone that can translate German?

Re: Looking for Kunaschk from Saxony
My Great- grandfather was Harry. He was a boxer and an artist. We have a lot of his paintings. His story is that he was so tired of the winters, that he drove as far south as he could with his family and ended up in Hot Springs, AR. That is where most is his family lives today. (My grandmother and great aunt) I do not have any more info for you and this is actually the first forum that I have found about the Kunasch family. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Looking for Kunaschk from Saxony
I was just searching on ancestry.com and was surprised to see some family members trying to track down more information on the Kunaschk/Kunasch family tree. My father and mother where Kenneth and Bernice Kunasch of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. If I could help in anyway please be free to contact me.

Re: Looking for Kunaschk from Saxony
DKunasch- I am Mary Kunasch and my father was Stanley Kunasch, your Dad's brother. I now live in Oak Harbor, Wa and am married to Larry Dodge. I have been casually collecting information on the Kunasch/Kunaschk family so I think it would be great if we could share information. I understand our family came from Germany and in 2015 we are planning to go to Germany and would like to visit cities/towns where our ancestors lived. Perhaps we might even find relatives! Lets stay in touch, Mary Dodge

Re: Looking for Kunaschk from Saxony
James, My wife, Mary Kunaschk, grew up in Fon du Lac, WI and also spent some of her childhood in Phoenix. She says James and Mel sound familiar but she does not recall specifics about family relationships. Since Fon du Lac is a small town and Kunaschk is an uncommon name I'd be very surprised if you are not related. Mary has twin brothers, Tom and Jerry (b: 1952) and a sister Suzanne (b: 1948)
We are novices on this ancestry research so we don't have much information now but we would be glad to share if/when we find things.
