Searching for relatives in USA
I was born in Cabiny, Slovakia (close to Medzilaborce, Krasny Brod). I am very much interested in learning about my relatives among emigrants to USA. Their family name can be spelled as Kumicsak, Komicsak, Komichak, etc. Among my ancestors are the names: Dreveni, Durila, Metil, Vojtisak Barna, Kunicka, Gavula, Skovran, Ziz, Sopira, Gelzan, Ligus. I have succeeded in finding some of my lines until 1798. I can help others, since I have copies of records here in Kosice, Slovakia.

I have some information on Barna's in the US. If you have a name that emmigrated here I would be very happy to help. I am looking for any info on Nicholas and Pelegia Barna in the village of Topolyan, Zemplen county.

My grandfather Louis (Lajos) Barna lived in Chicago, Ill. He came from a very large family in Pest, Hungary. Family history claims he was the only one that immigrated to the U.S. His birth was 1886 and he died in 1960. Any info you may have would be greatly apppreciated.

Hi! In 1968, four years before she died, my great grandmother, Fevronia (Veronika) Laverick (nee Kaczmarek) told me about her birth and childhood in Austria-Hungary. She said she was born on 8 January 1889. She was born in the country, but when I asked her the names of the closest towns/villages she said "Medzilaborce" and "Krasny Brod". She described the estate she grew up on as situated along the banks of a river (the Laborec?), and her front yard sloped down toward the river. She said her father was named Lucash Kaczmarek and her mother was named Katie. I know she had a sister, Martha, born in December, 1886, and a younger brother, Michael. My great grandmother and her sister came to America in 1902 and settled in Philadelphia, Pa. Martha married and died in 1929; my great grandmother in 1972. I'm not certain whether the family was of Ruthenian orgins or not. In America my great grandmother belonged to a Latin Catholic Church, and later a Russian Orthodox Church. Can you help? I'm very interested to learn more about this family! Thank you. Richard Cochran ( rcochran@tucker-usa.com)

Hi Richard,
This week I was studying the birth records at the civil register office in Krasny Brod and have found the following record:
14. 5. 1896 son Mihaly [Michael] was born to Madej Janos from Krasny Brod 23 yrs. (born in Murochow, Galicia) and Kaczmarik Tekla from Krasny Brod 28 yrs. (born in Brzezowec, Galicia).
Maybe the woman is related to Fevronia [ = Eufronia ?] I would like to learn how could she be related to Kumicak. Kindest regards, Juraj

I have tens of records concerning Barnas in the village of Cabiny (Slovakia) from the period 1798 up to present. If you would give the most recent names and dates I would try to find them. There are still many Barnas living in the village and in Kosice.

Juraj,
Thank you so much for looking this up. At the moment I do not know of the relationship of the Kaczmarik family to the Kumicak family, except they are from the same general vicinity. This information about Tekla Kaczmarik is the first information that I have ever had indicating a town of origin of any Kaczmarik family! It's very possible that Tekla was a sister of my great great grandfather, Lucash Kaczmarik. If you happen to find anything else about these people, I'd be so grateful to hear about them, and forever in your debt!
Richard

Juraj,
One other small question. Do you know where this place is, or what parish it may have belonged to in the past? I have not been able to find it in maps or gazateers. Thank you!

I have found the villages Brzozowiec and Morochow on detailed (1:125 000) Polish touristic map of Bieszczady. They are 10 and 9 km apart from Lesko, respectively, in SW and W direction. The linear distance of Lesko to Krasny Brod in Slovakia is about 30 km.

Do you have any information on Michael Barna in Barnesboro or Cymbri, PA during period 1900-1945? Thanks for any information. LizandTed@aol.com
