Thankyou for your reply. I believe that you are correct but a Cowgill researcher disputes the fact that my ancestor John Cougle, UEL was a Cowgill and a descendant of the same ancestor as him. I need to find concrete proof that Cowgill and Cougle are the same surname.
The Cowgill researcher believes my ancestors to be of German extraction in the new world but my ancestor Cpt John Cougle was a high lay officer in the Anglican church and the English being a snobbish bunch would not have allowed a German to be in such a position.
If you know of any Cougles in the USA who are doing ancestry research let me know or if you have any furthur information it would be greatly appreciated. You can contact me direct at tagbrook@hotmail.com. thankyou

There's an obscure notice published in 1861 in Milwaukee's German papers for a Theodor Kugel to pick up a letter postmarked from Neustrelitz before it gets sent back.

Sometimes in genealogy research that's all you get. But at least there's a growing index to make it available ;-)

Indexing started in 2007 and continues today.

Just wondering if you ever found the answer to this, my ancestor was a Capt. John Cougle from Sussex N.J. He was a loyalist soldier for the New Jersey Volunteers during the Revolutionary war and his property in N.J. was confiscated by the rebels. I would love to find out more about him and his family history from his life in New Jersey before the war. Capt. Cougle settled in New Brunswick, but apparently had a brother who stayed in N.J. and bought back his property after the war.
