ANDREW KUFFER/ANNA M. (MARY) GEDEON
We are looking for information and relatives of ANDREW1 KUFFER and Anna M. (Mary) Gedeon. ANDREW KUFFER was born in Austria/Hungary on December 09, 1863. He immigrated to the USA in 1881. He married ANNA M. (Mary) GEDEON, born February 2, 1872 also in Austria/Hungary. She immigrated to the USA in 1889. They were married August 31, 1889 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
Andrew and Anna (Mary) had two children: My Grandfather, Lawrence Andrew Kuffer/Kueffer born August 31, 1894 and Ernest Kuffer/Kiefer born in 1902. Andrew died August 9, 1907 in Chicago, Illinois. Anna (Mary) remarried to George Bachmann, January 30, 1908 and had a daughter, Augusta, born October 5, 1915. Anna (Mary) died December 23, 1944.
My Grandfather, Lawrence Andrew Kueffer married Paula Fabits, and immigrant of Stegersbach, Austria in Chicago, Illinois in 1919. They had two children. Lawrence Edward, born May 17, 1924 and died July 27, 1948 our father, Walter Karl Kueffer, born July 31, 1928 and died November 9, 1990.
The family believes that the marriage of Anna (Mary) and Andrew was arranged by their families. Our search for the surnames of Kuffer and Gedeon, in the same locale, has lead us to Kocise/Kassa, Abauj-Torna. We are hoping to learn something of our Hungarian Heritage and possibly connect with relatives.
Note: The name Kuffer was originally spelled with two umlauts over the āuā.
Thank you!

Re: ANDREW KUFFER/ANNA M. (MARY) GEDEON
Zlatica,
Yes, I was aware that most of the Gedeons were from Medzev. I have not been able to find any Kuffer's in Medzev, through internet resources. For this reason, I focused on Kocise, where I find both Kueffer's and Gedeons. I plan to order and view the civil and church records of the MEDZEV area from LDS Family Learning Center. I will also place an order for civil and church records from KOSICE, which I read is 13 miles northeast of Medzev. I didn't get around to posting my query on the Medzev sight, but plan to do so when I have the time.
Most of our family names are German. Oral and Bible Family History says German Austrian, although we believe our Fabits ancestry is Croatian Austrian. My Grandpa, Lawrence, had only one brother, Ernest, who died when I was very young. He was the only living KUFFER/KUEFFER family member of whom we were aware. When Andrew/Andreas came to the USA in 1880, he did not go directly to Chicago, Illinois. According to the 1892 Chicago Voters Registration records, he lived in Illinois, outside of Cook County, for a year before moving to Chicago. The official documents, which list Andrew and Mary, such as US Federal Census's, Marriage Certificates, and Death Certificates list a variety of birthplaces, including Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Germany and even Poland. Quite confusing, but understandable considering boundry changes and communication barriers. Variations of the surnames include:
KUFFER/KUEFFER/KIEFER/KIEFFER BACHMANN/BACHMAN/BICKMAN
The only other KUFFER's in Illinois, in that time period, (According to the 1880 US Federal Census) were Joseph age 58, Barbary age 53 and Philip age 16 in Sandoval, Marion County. Baden was given as the birthplace of both Joseph and Barbary. Joseph and Philip were shoemakers. My sister, Sue and I have speculated that Joseph was a relative and Andrew was with those KUFFER's in Sandoval before moving to Chicago in 1881. We do not know. I will have to place a query on the US Genweb in Marion County, Illinois. Also, I have yet to try to trace the ancestry and descendancy of Joseph to inquire about their family heritage.
Thank you very much for the links to all the websites. I will follow your advice and post to all the appropriate message boards. I appreciate your time and direction.

Re: Kuffer listing in Nalepkovo, SK
Your welcome, Jennifer. Up to 1918 the records would say Austria or Hungary. SK's phone site is listing KUFFER (with two umlauts on U) (German spelling). www.zoznamst.skhttp://mapy.atlas.sk for locating Nalepkovo which might be your Kuffers ancestral village. The old name for Nalepkovo was Vogendrisel, Wagendrisel, Vondrisel, Wagendrussel. Check those church films for the family name.
