Several messages talk about researching Kufahl family trees. It is my understanding that spelling variations of Kufahl include Kuphal. Does any one out there agree or disagree. While there are not a great many of either, I do not want to waste time if the family is not in the same tree.

My name is Barbara Kuphal Carrier. I was born in Wisconsin. My father was Charles Albert Kuphal, son of William and Violet Phelps. As far as the spelling, I have not heard of this in my family.

Hi Roy,
I do agree that there is the spelling variations that are from this same family. I believe it is like any other name with various spellings. Some are spelled as Kufall, Kuphal, Kufahl, Kewfall, and others.
My Gr.Gr.Grandmother was Emily Kufall, and I am not for sure how she spelled her name. So, I am having to look at all names and when searching I use the soundex alot. And from what I have seen there is different ways the name is spelled but pronounced the same. And I would agree totally, that most of them come from the same family line. My Emily Kufall was born in Germany and was imigrated to the states when she was 2 yrs. old. How about yours??
I have just opened up a new KUFAHL mailing list here at rootsweb. Just getting started and need some list members.
I would really like to keep in touch with you, and lets see what we come up with on this name variations. I am sure it would be interesting. Anyone else what to submit to the KUFAHL mailing list??
Hope to see you there and please email me.
Thanks

Hello,
I had been trying to research on my grandmother's family - the Kufahl's and had almost given up before I tried the "soundex" option instead of "exact" spelling. Wow!! In 1 week I've been able to trace my family back to my GGGGgrandparents using mostly census records. The spellings have been 'Kuphfal', 'Kufahl', and 'Kufall' all for the same family, but different census years. I am very lucky that my family has been in the Town of Maine, Marathon County, WI since immigrating here in 1843. The hard part now is trying to find the wives' maiden names and what happened to the daughters. If anyone else has any connections to Town of Maine, I'd love to talk. I grew up there and have since moved to the State of Maine, but WI will always be "home". The moral of my post is: Soundex is VERY important when doing research!
Thanks,
Becky

Hi, You haven't said which spelling you were looking for. Yes, there are many different spelling for surnames and I have found it depends on which family member changes his surname spelling at the point of entry into the US. Then again, a sibling of that family can also change it later on down the line, but I have not found the generation of kids around the 1900's change their spelling.
So anyway, I have a KUFAHL, Loring H. born Feb 15, 1899 in Wheaton, Pottawatomie, Kansas married to Irene Christine Bosse. You will find this Kufahl family living in Wheaton, Kansas. Loring's parents are William Fredrich Kufahl b 1865 in Germany and Bertha L. Berges b 1874 in Onaga, Kansas.
Maybe I have helped and maybe I haven't.
It depends which spelling you want to follow, I think.
I have not followed William and Bertha's children's lines.
If there is anything I can follow up on, email me at dljjkb@gwtc.net. Joan

My mother's maternal side is Koffal, & I do believe I've seen the spelling of Kuphal in my family tree records, along Kofahl, Kufahl, Kuhpfahl etc. The spelling Koffal is generally considered an anglicization. The name in itself seems to derived probably from the slavic Koval, "kuzn" meaning "to forge", otherwords a blacksmith. This gives rise to the many variations such as Kowalski, Kofax, Kovacs etc. This is not absolute ofcourse, as I think there can be a close line between two names of different origin in the spelling.
