My great-grandmother's maiden name was Johanna Christiane Wendschuh. I'd like to explore a connection with the mother of Maria Pauline Kuechler born Oct 28, 1867. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I am forwarding to my cousin who will probably have more information than I do. I do not know anything about Ernestine's family, have not gone into that branch. as yet, have planned to but have been working on another branch. Was your greatgrandmother born in Sohland?

John, I am Susan's cousin. I am happy to discuss with you our Wendschuh-Kuechler family. Here is what we have on the family of Maria Pauline Kuechler/Kiichler. She was the daughter of Carl/Karl Gottfried Kuechler/Kiichler. The family came from Sohland an der Spree, Sachen and emigrated to America in 1881. Father Karl "did not like it in America" and he returned to Sohland and died there in 1913. His wife and the children that came to America remained in America.
Carl Gottfried Kuechler b. 26 Aug 1828 d. 1913
married
Ernestine Wendschuh/Wensuch/Wedschuh b.11 Dec 1827 and died in the State of Kansas, U.S.A. on 15 May 1911.
Issue all born in Sohland an der Spree:
1) Carl/Karl Gottfried Kiichler b.1856 d.1943 in the State of Colorado. He married his cousin Pauline Kuechler in the State of Nebraska in 1887. She was the daughter of August and Caroline (WACHTLER) KUECHLER/KIICHLER.

2) Christine b.1857 d.1867
3) Augusta Amelia b.1859 married Ernest Richter.
4) Ernestine b.1859 d.1903 married Valentine Rothley
5) Ernestine (?) b. ca1879 [This Ernestine was counted as a child of matriarch Ernestine on the passenger list to America. She may have been a grandchild. I do not know anything more about her.]

6) Maria Pauline Ernestine b.1867 d.1943 she married William Joseph Lushinsky

7) Amelia Augusta Wilhelmine b1871 d.1955 married John Henry Peter Brunhoeber [These were my gr grandparents]

There is a possibility that there may have been a child or two that remained in Sohland. I have more information on the children born to the above couples and more detailed information on the family. As you can see, our surnames have been butchered over time. I have given the most common spelling versions our American immigrants were recorded or that they each adopted for themselves.

I am happy to share with you. I hope that you are able to find clues that we are connected or at least answer your questions and needs. Please feel comfortable and welcome to contact me directly either at vlouise_@hotmail.com or at v.louise@comcast.com. Thank you very much for posting your interest in our family.

I need to know if your Carl Gotfried Kuechler born in 1828 had a brother Frederich born in 1839 in Germany and came over in 1858 with wife, Magdalena Higel Kuechler and 6 children. Do you have an address for the church to write to? I have an 1880 census in Chicago, IL mentioning him but only know he died from 1892-95 in Chicago.

Hi Marge,
I do not know if he had a brother or not, do you know when Fredrich came over or if he was from Sohland?
Address for church is being sent to you by my cousin, also phone number.
Good luck in your search, will be happy to share any information!

Hmm, I do not know if my Charles/Carl had a brother at all. You posted that Fred was born in 1839 and came to America with a wife and six children in 1858. Is that date of birth and/or to America correct? That made Fred age 19 coming to America with a wife and 6 children.

If the date for his coming to America was actually later, then I may be inclined to rethink a possible connection. As you have it written, I would tend to think that we are not [directly] related. My Kuechler name has various spellings and I believe the closest correct German spelling is Kiichler the "ii" actually being the umlat "u". There are many "Kuechler" families and I am no authority on the accepted [German] origin of that name.

Carl did have a son named Karl. Karl married his cousin Pauline Kiichler. Her parents came to America probably the same time as Carl and his family (with son Karl). Pauline was d/o August and Caroline (Wachtler) Kiichler. She had at least two sisters Ernestine and Augusta. August died in Marshall County Indiana in 1890.

The address you asked for is:

EV.-Luth. Pfarramt
Am Markt 17
02689 Sohland a.d. Spree
Tel/Fax 035936/37335

It would be really nice if you or anyone who reads this address and contacts the Lutheran church repository, would post your results here. The community was "small" back then and all of us searching that area could benefit knowing the names of other family/neighbors that come from there. We also may benefit to know what families did not come from there for those who receive a "not found/there" reply.

I would suggest that we exhaust our research on our family here in America before we jump the ocean and unindate a local church with requests for searches if our request is only a fishing expedition. Knowing such as when they immigrated, when they arrived in America, searching for naturalization records to at least try to pinpoint from when/where they came from in Germany, and if they came over married then provide maiden names, and include known names of children (born in Germany) with approximate year of birth, these types of details may help the German repository hone-in on your family.

Good luck Marge. Let us know if you think or determine that you are connected to our Kuechler/Kiichler group.

Thanks Vicky for answering so quickly. Yes I got the date to America wrong. It should have been 1868 and my grandmother, Margaretha was born in 1870. Her mother, Magdalena Schaeffer was born about 1930 (she was almost 10 yrs. older than Fred) and she came from Baden. I can go back on her side thru her father Jacob Schaefer and mother Magdalena Higel thru www.Familysearch.org but I don't know anything about Fred except in the 1880 census in Chicago and they spell it Kechler and I have official papers in the 1900s that show Kuechler so who knows.

I will write to that church and let you know. I am trying a church in Chicago too but no answer yet.

Thanks, Marge

I look forward to learning what you hear back. I found your Fred Kechler in the 1880 census. Sometime when you have time, would you send me an outline of Fred and Magdalena's family group (children, births, places) and also what you have on Magadalena Higel's immediate family. I am interested in comparing names, dates, and places to what I know on my family lines. My email is vlouise_@hotmail.com. Thank you.

I found in the census and they are buried in Forest Park (Waldheim)

If you need more details on above, I can dig them up.
