Changing the Family Name

Classification: Lookup
Surnames: Kuechenmesiter, Kuchenmesiter, Cookenmaster
The family name was changed in the 1800s when the first wave of immigrants came from the old world to settle in the Michigan area. The name Kuechenmesiter, and its other counter-part spelling Kuchenmesiter, was first changed to the Anglican spelling of Cookingmaster. It was later changed to Cookinmaster. The final derivation was Cookenmaster. Some of the family has recently dropped the last eight letters of the name, and are now know simply as Cook.

This has definitely been one of the hardest names in my family research also. Was there a primary part of Germany that most of the Kuchenmesiters came from?

The Kuchenmesiters (Cookenmasters) originally were from Barvaria and moved into Prussia. Some later moved to France and England. Kuchen (German for cake) and mesiter (German for master), thus the cake or cook master, were often the cheif cooks or chefs to a noble house.

My family moved to Russia during the time of Czar Peter and Catherine. When German persecution began in Russia, my great-great grandparents moved from Russia to the United States, specifically, Michigan. There are Cookenmaster's and Kuchenmeisters all over the United States. Today you will find us in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Montana, Pennsylvania and a few other states.
