With such an unusual name, who knows the origin? Obviously Polish, but was it shortened from something longer at immigration way back when? My parents from the Springfield, MA area, grandparents (spoke Polish only) from Ludlow, MA.

I posted earlier that I found out the KUC is a very popular name in Poland. I thought I heard about 100 different families in Poland have that name. It is like having the name SMITH in the United States. I will ask my family more and see what they say.

My great grandmother was a Kuc who came over from Poland. It says that she was born in Austria. Her port of departure was Hamburg. The other location for birth they gave as Rzgnemuz can you help me with that? Also says her residence was Rzepienik, her ehtnicity/nationality was Galizien (Galician), her occupation Hausm (I don't know what that is). She was born in 1892 and came to america in 1910. Thank you so much your help is greatly appreciated. Lori Anthony

My family name is Kuc too. In Poland lives about 7500 people with this name so it’s average popular in Poland. I did very serious studies concerning origins of this name doing my work on family tree. The name Kuc comes from specified region of Poland covered by triangle between Cracow, Czestochowa, Katowice. The most Kuc’s lives there, some others are spread throughout Poland. Nobody knows the reliable explanation of name “Kuc” meaning even professionals. So I did my own research. As a result I have formulated 3 theories
However in my opinion the most reliable theory is that name Kuc comes from old Slavic (Poles are Slavic people) word “kuc” In some ancient Slavic languages of “western” group of Slavic tribes “kuc” meant small mountain or hill. This word is not longer used in modern Slavic languages. In triangle Cracow, Czestochowa, Katowice lived Slezanie and Wislanie the Slavic tribes from western group. To the western Slavic group belongs also Serbs. That’s why in Montenegro and Serbia name Kuc exists too. In Montenegro even one of tribal clans was named Kuc. So according to this theory name Kuc is very old and Slavic origini.

If you look in a POLISH-ENGLISH dictionery, you will find the name: kuc (pronounced kutz) which means small horse or pony.
If you put a tick over the 'c, then kuc is pronounce (kuch)and this means to hammer or to forge.
