James N. Kreegar was born in 1840 in Stokes or Forsyth Counties. I am trying to find his birth records. Does anyone know where I should start? The name Kreegar was spelled many ways, it almost seems like they were trying to avoid spelling it the same way twice. This family later moved to Indiana.

I believe that James N Kreegar might be my husband's great grandfather. My husband's grandfather was Chester Otto Kreegar. He lived most of his life in the Anderson, (Madison County) Indiana. My husband's father was Chester Lattimore Kreegar from Chester Otto's first marriage. Chester Otto's first marriage was to Beatrice Zion. They divorced after having Chester Lattimore and Morris Kreegar.
Chester Otto Kreegar then married Laural Hancock (I believe that was her last name.) With Laural, he had three children, William Edward, Richard, and Charlotte Jo Ann.
Contact me if you think that these might be the people who are seeking.
Laural Kreegar told my husband that one of Chester Otto's grandfathers decided to change the spelling of our name to Kreegar so it would be different. The Kreegars are from Germany, but the grandfather who changed the spelling was Welch. Supposedly if a Kreegar spells their name the way we do, he or she is a relative.
