Do you know if your John Phiefer had been previously married? I am looking for a John Phiefer, born about 1884 and at one time married to an Anne and they had a son named Clarence I. Phiefer, born Dec 1904.

Yes. John Phiefer's first wife was also a widow with children from her first marriage. They had six children before she died.

This census records probably is the shortest list of some of the children.
1910 US Census, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, Whitefield Township, p. 1
HH 14, Family 14
Phiefer, John, head, white male, age 44, second marriage, married 2 years, born Holland of Dutch parents, immigrated 1885, citizenship=PA, speaks English, farmer, able to read and write, rents farm
, Bertha, wife, white female, age 45, second marriage, married 2 years, seven children, six living, born in Germany of German parents, immigrated 1872, speaks English, able to read and write
, Alice, daughter, white female, age 13, single, born Minnesota of Dutch parents, attends school
, John, son, white male, age 11, single, born Minnesota of Dutch parents, attends school
, Leonard, son, white male, age 9 single, born Minnesota of Dutch parents, attends school
, Sara, daughter, age 7, white female, single, born South Dakota of Dutch parents, attends school
, Clarence, son, white male, age 5, born Minnesota of Dutch parents
Knott, Carlton, step-son, white male, age 16, single, born Minnesota, Dutch father, German mother, attends school
, Alvina, step-daughter, white female, age 13, single, born Minnesota, Dutch father, German mother, attends school

I have a bit more, not much. Would be happy to share. Are you a descendant?

Glen,

Just saw your post re: Clarence on the Pheifer board -- the Clarence I have did end up in Clear Lake, Skagit County, Washington, as part of a migration of nearly the entire Knott-Pheifer family. He was there at least in 1940 and 1982, and is mentioned in obituaries of two of his step-sisters, along with two of his sisters. I have no record of his being in Kansas.

Here is the 1900 Census record for John Pheifer, which shows some of his step-children from his first wife's marriage, at least some of whom stayed in Minnesota:
1900 US Census, Minnesota, Kandiyohi County, Holland Township, Family #103, HH#101
Pheifer, John, head, white, male, born January 1866 in Holland, age 34, married 4 years, both parents born in Holland, immigrated in 1885, [citizenship=Pa], farmer, able to read, write, speak English, owns farm with mortgage.
, Annie, wife, born March 1868 in Holland, had eight children, six living, both parents born in Holland, immigrated 1873, able to read, write, speak English
, Allis, daughter, born March 1896, Minnesota
, Johannes, son, born October 1898, Minnesota
Gerretje Flynn, step-daughter, born March 1886, Michigan, at school 2 months
William Flynn, step-son, born Oct. 1889, Minnesota, at school 8 months
Henry Flynn, step-son, born April 1893, Minnesota, at school 4 months
Janje W. Flynn, step-daughter, born June 1895, Minnesota

I am not a direct descendant of John Phiefer. The John I am looking for had a son named Clarence I. I have conflicting information on Clarence's birth. One source tells me he is born in Minnesota and another tells me he is born in Kansas. This man was married to my great aunt Wynona Maye Williams. I have traced Clarence in 1910 and 1920 living with his grandparents in Kansas and in 1930 he is a watertender 2nd class for the Coast Guard in Connecticut. In 1932 Wynona is living in Oregon with her first husband Ruel Neal and then is 1933 Wynona marries Clarence in Vancouver, Wash. I have received a funeral order for Clarence from 1990 listing his father as JohnPhiefer and his mother as Annie Kingma(N). With Clarence being born in Dec 1904, I am guessing his father's birth as 1880-84. Does this ring any bells?

Perhaps I've been tracing the wrong Clarence. Maybe the one born 16 Dec 1904 in Kansas is not mine and there is another with the same birth date? Looking at the funeral notice again, it says that my Clarence is born in Minnesota and the one listed in your post is born about 1904-05. Do you know his exact birth date?

It does look like there may be two Clarences. I don't know too much about the Pheifers, as they are not direct ancestors for me, either, and I didn't take the time to get as much information as I should have. There may be more available on line now, as it has been such a long time since I did this research.

Gayel, bless your heart, you might have put me back on the right path. John's wife Annie fits the info on his funeral record and Clarence, in 1910 fits the age and birth year and Minnesota fits with the birthplace mentioned in his funeral record. And now you say that this family was movingto Skagit County? Do you know where?

Hi, Connie,

As you can tell from earlier messages, I don't have too much on the Phiefers, and particularly not on John Phiefer's first wife Annie Kingma Flym.

Some of what I do have is on World Connect, http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d... (Or you could go through the KnottKratz database.)

I do have a bit more. Have a look at what's there and contact me through the email address with any questions or updates.

Out of curiosity, are you descended from her first husband, John Willem Flym, or from her second husband, John Phiefer?

Hoping to hear from you,
Gayel
