Looking for relatives of my Grandfather
My grandfather Stanley Kowalczik imigrated from Poland. Ended up living near Warsaw, ND. I am wondering if there are any relatives (cousins, brothers, sisters) that may have also imigrated from Poland or are still there. I am kind of new to this searching so I could use any tips, etc.

I'm looking for Kowalczyks but I've seen your spelling used also. Can you provide any dates, locations, names of other family members?

My Grandfather Stanley had the following children. Joe, Stanley, Edward (My father), Richard, Helen, Eleanor, Dorothy, Irene,Vernie, Josephine, and Florence. There are suppose to be some relatives in Greenbush, Minnesota but they may have been on my Grandmothers side. Someone said that Stanley's mother also came to live here with him. As far as dates my father was born October 30, 1919 (in Greenbush, MN) and died January 11, 1988. My grandfather Stanley was born May 7, 1890 and died 2-15-1968. I don't know if any of this is informative or not. Let me know. Some of the locations of the Kowalczik's were Grafton, North Dakota, and Ardoch, North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota, cousin Daniel Kowalczik in Detroit, Michigan.

I'm not sure whether there's a match, but since I run across so few leads, I'll give you all I know.
My grandfather, Peter Kowalczyk (also spelled Kowalczik) was born in Poland in about 1893, possibly in the Krakow area. He came to the US in about 1913, possibly with one or more brothers or sisters. His wife, Julia Zawrotniak came to the US from Poland at about the same time. I believe that they were married here in about 1916, but I have been unable to locate any marriage records for them. Peter and Julia had five children: Anthony (b. 1917), Thaddeus (b. 1919), Mary (b. 1921), Walter (b. 1923), and Wanda (b. 1924).
Because the two oldest children were baptized in St. StephenÂ’s Catholic Church in Perth Amboy, NJ, itÂ’s possible that the family lived there until ~1920. Their address at that time may have been 373 Inslee Street, where my father, Thaddeus Kowalczyk was born.
In 1920 or 1921, the family moved to an apartment at 26 Washington Avenue in Laurel Hill, Queens, New York in 1921. PeterÂ’s brother Joseph and his wife Catherine also lived in this building. Joseph was born in Poland in 1890 and came to the US in about 1906. Catherine was born in Austria in 1888 and came to the US in about 1903. At the time of the 1925 census, Peter and Catherine had nine children, all born in the US: John (b. 1914), Josephine (b. 1915), Mildred (b. 1917), Alfred (b. 1918), Casimer (b. 1919), Andrew (b. 1920), Joseph Jr. (b. 1921), Alexander (b. 1923), and Corro (b. 1924). (The last name may be Charles or Carl.)
The 1925 census also lists another family in the building as Klowalska. This similar name may be a coincidence, but it may be Kowalczyk misspelled by the census-taker. The fatherÂ’s name was not listed, but the motherÂ’s name was Julia and the census lists six children: John (b. 1911), Leo (b. 1913), Catherine (b. 1915), Alex (b. 1917), Joseph (b. 1919), and Sophie (b. 1920).
Eventually, Peter and Julia moved to 5511 43rd Street in Laurel Hill Queens, NY. One of Peter's brothers, probably Joseph, lived about half a block away on 43rd Street. Julia and Peter lived at this address until ~1950 when Julia died. The house was later sold and Peter was living at a rooming house at 5119 46th Street, Woodside Queens, NY when he died in July 1957.
Let me know if any of this seems to match. Also, I've been assuming that the family came through Ellis Island, but I haven't been able to trace them. How did your Kowalczik's get to Minnesota? I would guess that they went through Chicago but have no idea how they would have gotten there.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mike, I have read your message to Judy and in MY family we have a Alexzander and a Leo and My Grand parents were in Queens for a while. Then they went to Sussex Nj. Alexzander Jr is my father and he was born in 1918. and Leo was born in 1927. Maybe their is a connection here.
|
Thanks for the response. Actually, there is at least one connection - I also lived in Sussex, NJ. That was from 1975 to 1984. I eventually moved to New York and am now in North Carolina. As for a family connection, there could be one even if the census data and family information don't quite match. Do you have any more details that you provided? For example, churches or schools that they attended, addresses, etc.? I'll be looking into all the Kowalczyks in Queens and will be glad to share anything I find that might help you.
