My grandmother also came to this country in the early 1900's - her fathers name was Elias Kowal. Her name was Katherine and she had sisters, Anna and Mary brothers John George. They came from what was then considered Galacia a town called Rutka, Austria-Hungaria. Kowal was a common name which meant "Smith"

Hi:
I've been told my ancestors came from Russia, (Moscow)- Immigrated to America in the early 1900's - settled in Bridgeport, CT and then relocated to NE PA. My father's name was George and I know very little of his family. He married my mother, Anastasia after his first wife died. (second marriage for my father, first marriage for my mother). Any KOWAL'S out there who can help with additional info?

my father his parents came from Ukraine in
1952. They came from a region called Bukovina - the
city of Chernivtsi. The Kowal last name is very
popular as in fact it does mean "smith" or
more accurately: blacksmith. Also the word
has the same meaning in Polish, i believe
in Russian too.

I've never seen this site before but I put in my name and your post came up. My grandparents and father came to the U.S. from the Ukraine just after WWII.

I don't really have any info on my grandfather's side of the family at all. I believe he had a brother though...

We just might be related. And I couldn't be happier. I have been trying very hard to find someone, somewhere.......My Great Grandfather, John Kowal, a Miner in Switchback, West Virginia (or thereabouts). He married Anna Lisewski (maybe be spelled wrong). They had my Grandmother, Julia Theresa Kowal January 29th 1915 in Switchback. Grandma died when I was 7. This is all I know, really - I can get you in touch with my Aunt, Uncle and Mom for more info if this all sounds familiar to you. Please, e-mail me- Tracy Foran at tntforan@aol.com

sorry
