I have an interesting tale to tell you, and this might fit in or fill any holes regarding Joseph and Andrew (Andy) Kovack.

My name is Joseph Antone and I live in Lancaster, California. My grandfather was born, Joseph Christopher Antonik, October 1, 1892 in Newburgh, New York. Shortly after WWI he changed his family name to Antone. No one ever knew why. I believe there were several reasons. It was rumored he had killed a man during a boxing match before my father was born. There was another story where he skipped town (Pueblo, Colorado) without paying for a new set of tires for his car. There were even stories about a group or gang referred to as the Black Hand. He was constantly on the move.

He had three sisters all born in Pueblo, Colorado, Margaret, Helen, and Sue. Margaret was the first to marry in 1917 to a man named Andy Kovack. Very little is known about him even well after he married my father’s aunt. He was born in 1888 and from Austria. In 1918 they had a son named Edward. Around 1920, it looks like his mother and father or maybe an uncle and aunt (Geo and Eva) lived in the home next door to Andy and Margaret on South Santa Fe Ave., in Pueblo. In April 1921, Andy became a citizen of the US. After that, no one seems to know what happened to him. Everyone believes he either died or ran off. All the Pueblo City Directories identify Margaret as the widow to Andrew. It wasn’t until I came across a copy of the 1930 census for Canon City, Colorado (40 miles west of Pueblo), and there was an Andy Kovak (spelling?) residing as an inmate. I came across a web site called BlackSheepAncestors.com and it indicates ways to obtain Colorado inmates records. I think it might be worth the 20 or so bucks to find out. I wonder if Margaret made up the story of her husband being dead just to save herself from embarrassment.

It is not until 1939 when a Kovack event appears on the radar screen again. Theresa M. Kovack moved in with my father’s aunt and cousin. I believe she came from Colorado Springs (it too is about 40 miles NE of Canon City) where other Kovack’s reside.

In 1942 the Kovack household was getting larger and living at 1925½ Berkley Ave. in Pueblo . There are now Andrew M. and Joseph R. Kovack living with Margaret, Edward, and Theresa. I did some digging and found out Andrew M. is about 21 and in the USMC.

1943 the household still has the same residents but this time Joseph R. is now in the Navy. This makes me think Joseph R. is the brother to Andrew M. and Theresa M., and a nephew to Andy (the widow Margaret’s husband).

In 1946 it is just Margaret and Edward living at 1925½ Berkley Ave.

In 1948 it is only Edward living on Berkley and he is now a student.

By 1950 there are no Kovacks living in Pueblo, CO.

I have come across clues of a Pennsylvania link to these two younger Kovaks.

I hope ther is someone out there who might have some insite to these three Kocack men and the Colorado/Pennsylvania link.

Way East of Valaska Dubova {Olahdubova]. What if he changed it so as not to have a "foreign" looking name. Maybe he did not like the way the surname was being pronounced in English. He still kept the root of the surname in tact. ANTONe vs ANTONik. That's my take on the surname.
