I'm trying to reach the KOVACKs who lived near Scranton, PA.

I saw a message on the KOVAC board a long time back from an Amy KOVACK Sweet who says that her father was a cousin of my grandfather Alex KOVATCH. I'm trying to piece this information together.

Here is the KOVACK tree that I can derive from Amy's message (may be of interest):

From http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/surnames.kovac/... :

. . John Kovacs (b. in Austria-Hungary)
. . + Anna Rusnak (b. in Austria-Hungary)
. . . . Edward J. Kovack (b. 31 Jan 1922 in Scranton, PA)
. . . . + Baker, Marilyn M. (b. 17 Aug 1922 in Scranton, PA)
. . . . . . Kathy Kovack Sweet
. . . . Mike
. . . . Mary Kieper
. . . . Marie (Mary) Horovitch
. . . . Valeska Holland
. . . . Julia Lucy
. . . . Anna Brozetti
. . . . Bernice
. . . . Katherine (Kitty)

I know there were many spellings to my last name with the base probably being KOVAC -- I trying to figure out if there is a connection here.

I am constantly adding new information to a family web site that I've started -- http://www.kovatch.net

The first interesting fact I learned is that I'm not actually Hungarian but Carpatho-Rusyn which is a nationality without a country. Yes, they did come from an area in the Austria-Hungarian empire but I always thought I was Hungarian and that may not be true.

Yes my Dad was Alex's cousin.
We used to go down to his junkyard in pineBrook.
They were cousins through their fathers.
I remember going to Kingfishes place many times as a child with my Dad to visit with him.
There is no Amy Sweet.
It is Kathy Sweet's post.
All my Dads generation are dead and gone.

. John Kovacs (b. in Austria-Hungary)
When did John {Janos in Hungarian; Jan in Slovak come to America} Depending when you might want to look for a Draft Registration Form for him for WWl and/or WWll. It might have his place of birth.
. . + Anna Rusnak (b. in Austria-Hungary)
When did Anna come to America? Did she come married? If yes than both of the ancestors were either from same village or within 10 miles radius]
If they were naturalized citizen than the naturalization intent and petition will have a place of birth.

.. . . Edward J. Kovack (b. 31 Jan 1922 in Scranton, PA)
Your father's SS-5Fom [social security] would have his parents names.
Edward KOVACK
Birth Date: 31 Jan 1922
Death Date: Jun 1970
Social Security Number: 165-18-5699
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Pennsylvania

His church baptismal record for sure would have parents place of birth. Your parents church marriage record should have parents names and a place of birth.
. . . . + Baker, Marilyn M. (b. 17 Aug 1922 in Scranton, PA)
. . . . . . Kathy Kovack Sweet

They did come from same village, that much I do know.
I kind of think they were married when they came here.

I was very young when my Granmother died and no one ever talked about anything at all...
There were 8 or 9 siblings of my Dad and no one ever spoke of the old country at all or just refered to it as the old country.

Kathy,
in order to proceed with the research into the "old country", you need to find a location among the US documents. The LDS-Mormons have filmed the church records of Slovakia but they are indexed by a village than by a religion.
