I am looking for any leads on a Marija Kovačić (Mary Kovacic) who married a Jozef Krošelj in the 1880's in or around Kapella in the Dutchy of Styria, Austria-Hungary. This area is now located in Slovenia near the border with Croatia. The couple settled nearby in Slogonsko and had at least one son, Jozef Krošelj [a.k.a. Joseph Krosel, Jr.] who emigrated to Nebraska in 1912 (and thence to Pennsylvania) in the USA.

Can anyone tell me if Kovačić and Kovaèiè are variations of the same name in Slovenija?

There is a surname Kovačič or Kovačić in Slovenia and Croatia. My mothers maiden name was Kovačić. They are from Čakovec in Croatia, near Slovenian border. Her father was Josip, but I dont know much about him.

Thank you for the reply. I have found, since my previous post, that the name I am researching is spelled Kovačič (the other spelling is an internet artifact of fonts that don't have the "č" character). What you tell me confirms what I have found as the Village of Loč in Slovenia is quite near the Croation border. In Austrian times traveling across this frontier would have been almost as easy as moving between states in the United States.
