Would someone give me the correct pronouncation for KOUGH? I'm searching for COFF and though maybe these two names could be related but then I also though Kough may be pronounced Coe. Thanks

Unfortunately their is no "correct" way to pronounce the ough sound in english. I pronounce my name to rhyme with coe. I know of other cough's that pronounce it kofe (a long O sound) It is my understanding that the name is of Irish origin and was originally spelled cuffe . It is entirely possible that Kough and Cough are related but I do not have any personal knowledge of any Kough's. Sorry . Hope this helps . Clay

How about Cow, as in Bough? That's how my father pronounced his name.

Thanks for the response. Still trying to determine how Coff would have been spelled in Ireland.

It is pronounced Coe...and from what I am gathering from my own family members, Kough I believe is Scottish. I don't think the Kough's were from Ireland.

In my family it is pronounced "cuff" (it's my maiden name), and family lore claimed it was a Dutch name. I have come across the "cuff" spelling variation in some old church records.
