My mother's maiden name is Kotas, Wanda and she was born 1923 in Poland and we moved to the states in 1952. Does anyone know what the country of origin that name came from. Mom thinks it originated in Greece. Thank you.

Have you found any more information tracing your family to Greece? I have family (great-great grandfather) whose name was Naoum Kotas or Kottas. His sons came to America and dropped the last name (they took his first name as their last name). They are from Northern Greece / Macedonia area but I have been unable to find more information on them. Thanks!

No, I don't have any further information. But, it's funny that you mentioned Greece. My mother, who has no idea from where her father's lineage came from, swears she is partly Greek. Her neighbor, who is from Greece, mentioned it to her saying that her maiden name sounds Greek. Soooo, now she's Greek! My mother was young (20) went she left her home and married my dad. And at that age, her lineage was the last thing that she was interested in. Her parents are dead and she now wishes she would have found where everyone came from. Sorry. Keep me posted.

My family, whose last name is also Kotas, moved to the United States from Poland in 1985. We still have family left there, and also some who have moved to the states. A greek man my father once knew told him that kotas means chicken in greek. There is also an aboriginal tribe by the name of Kotas in the Niligri hills in India - maybe this helps a little.

Thank you for your reply. Is your family ancestory greek? My mother's neighbor, who is greek, said that her maiden name "kotas" sounds like it is greek. Now, mom is saying that's she greek.
Thank you.

I have also heard of the "chicken" translation. I have not been able to find many people with the Kotas or Kottas surname, however the few I did find a few people living in Thessalonika, Greece. Unfortunalty, they didn't know their ancestry! There are also some in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Germany, etc.

Thank you. Let me know if you find out more good stuff.

Kota is a Hungarian surname. Our line came from the area that is now Olaszliszha, Hungary and near the Ukranian border. They still live in the family walnut orchards and communal farm and produce commercially. They live near the Tisza River.
