Eddie Korach, b. abt. 1911, was the son of M.U. Korach and Lillie Hain. Lillie's parents, Edward and Estelle, lived in New York in 1870, San Francisco in 1880. Estelle died in SF in 1882, Edward in Tacoma in 1907. The firm of Korach and Bloom (both Hungarians) operated in Tacoma around 1900 and in Skagway Alaska in 1903.The Korachs moved to Akron, Ohio, by 1920, along with Lillie's sister, Gertrude Heinemann. By 1930 both were listed as widows. I am researching Tacoma's Jewish merchants and looking for descendants. Let's talk!

My connection is through Estelle Heinemann who was born in Tacoma about 1890 or thereabouts and died in Tacoma in 1919. My father was her first child with her husband, Isaac (Ike) Epstein. Pregnant with her second child, she contracted the flu during the pandemic of 1918-19 and died, as did the baby she was carrying, on Jan. 10, 1919. My grandfather, Ike, then moved to San Francisco where his mother was living so that she could help raise my father. I know that Estelle's father also owned land in Canada so I had thought that the family came down into Tacoma from there.
My grandfather died 8/20/1940, about five months before my parents were married and 6-1/2 years before I was born. Somewhere I have more info on Estelle Heinemann who was quite an interesting person as she went to business college and, after working in the field for a while, partnered with a friend to open the first woman-owned insurance agency west of the Mississippi, according to newspaper articles I've seen. I also have, again somewhere, a copy of her obituary, which would give her date of birth. She was an only child.
Her parents stayed in Tacoma. I know that my father had a cousin from there who was a nun before she left the convent to marry and raise a family in Northern California. I never met her. Also, in "Snow Falling on Cedars" there is a reference to the name Heine (as I recall - or maybe Hain as the name seems to have been altered from Heine at some point or so I was told). The Heines in the book, which is supposed to be based more or less on fact, are Lutherans who lived on Bainbridge Island. I have intended to contact the Historical Museum or Society there (listed as a reference in the book) to see if there's a connection there but I've never had the time. Maybe someday, or maybe you'd like to follow up on this if you have the time or interest in this possible other branch.
We (the Hain/Heine descendents) are supposed to be related to Heinrich Heine from one of his brothers as he had no children. I've always wondered if I was in any way related to the people who started the Hain natural food line but perhaps Hain is a common name. I don't know.
I'm glad to know where the Korach came in as I have a great picture of the family including, I believe, my great-great-grandmother as a child, sent by Eddie Korach whom I think I once met, to my father, Edwin Heinemann Epstein. My parents are both gone. I have a 23-year-old son and my brother, Barry, has two girls 15 and 18. That's the scoop. I'd love to hear more from you even if I'm terribly slow at getting to my email. I do get there eventually.
Sincerely, Joyce
