Hi there, I'm Daniel and I'm very familiar with this surename as it's my grantfather's from my mother side name.
My family is from Poland and this name is a polish name as you probably know. The meaning of this name is "a digger" but this word isn't in common use... there is no such a proffesion like "digger".

Hi Daniel,
Its great that you are taking an interest. The name does mean digger. Two of my four grandparents were also from poland. They moved to the U.S and settled in the town of Wilksborough (spelling?) Penn.

I had always wondered about the name and the meaning digger. I think I can shed some light on what I beleave to be the origin. My grandfather was a coal minor in the U.S. and poland has many mineds. Poland is famous for some of the salt mines. As you know they are a very religous nation and they even built a church underground completly out of salt as well as many others sculptures.

I live in San Jose California and am married to my wife Lily and have twin boys Justin and Cole. I would really like to hear anything that you discover on your quest of the name Kopacz. Who knows, maybe our families cross at some point.

Hi...I live Colorado Springs, CO but am currently residing temporarily in Tustin, CA. My grandmother's maiden name was Kopacz. She came from a town in Galicia, Poland. She immigrated in about 1910 and lived in Lawrence, MA until 1972 when she moved in with my parents in San Diego, CA. She was born 13 Aug 1891 and died 01 Feb 1975. She had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Her father's name (my mother wasn't sure of this) was Stanislaw Kopacz and her mother's name was Rosalia Kurtyka. I am lucky enough to have a picture of Rosalia. That, unfortunately, is all I know about the Kopacz family in Poland. I do have more information on the Kopacz' in Massachusetts, however.

Kat,
To say that your Kopacz family came from Galicia is like saying that I was born in New York state. Galicia was a big province. Have you tried looking for the ship's list (ellisisland.org) to see if her town is listed there? You may also check her death certificate, one of the children's baptism record with the archdiocese or even the death certificate to find her parents name and hometown in Poland.

It is interesting that your Kopacz line lived in Lawrence, MA as I have relatives in that area as well. But I don't think that they are related.

By the way, the previous poster was correct in that the surname Kopacz means digger. In the 1500's when surnames were created people were often named after their profession. When I went to Poland in 2003 there was a book titled Kopacz, which was about miners.

A book? How cool! I wish I could get a copy in English. Unfortunately, I don't know the language and wish I did.

My grandmother was from a village called Wola Radlawska and that's all I know.

Somehow, I know (and don't remember how) that my grandfather was from the Town of Borek, Tartako'wicz, Poland. Does that mean anything to you?

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. Would you be willing to email me at my personal email? If so, it's wolfkatgen@gmail.com.

Again, thank you...

Kurtyka, Agnicszko Woldradlowske, Austria
Kurtyka, Anna Wole Radlonska
Kurtyka, Franciszka Wola Rodlowska, Galicia
Kurtyka, Ignacy Woldradlowske, Austria There were more. I only listed few.

In Wola Radlowska's phone book KOPACZ and KURTYKA. Because of privacy law, no full address. www.ksiazka-telefoniczna.com
There is Borek and Tartak but Tartakowicz seems more like a surname than a village.

My great great grandparents Walentego Lazarz and Katarzyny Szczepanik had a daughter named Anna Lazarz, Born 29 Dec. 1848.
On the baptism certificate is listed as a godparent,
Joanna Kurtyka......this was on str. 51. ur. 37, Wola Radlowska. Could this person be a relative of yours?
