I will try to help you but I do not have much information. Stanley Kopacz(Wayne NJ) is my uncle and godfather. My mother, Stephanie Kopacz Yurek was his sister. If you access the 1940 census, there is data on the family. They lived in Bayonne, NJ at 36 East Nineteenth Street. Stanley was one of
eight children born to Wladyslaw(Walter) and Johanna Kopacz. My grandmother Johanna died before I was born and I believe Stanley's dad is listed as a widower. My siblings and I enjoyed good times at your mom's home in Staten island NY and they would visit us when they came to Linden NJ to visit Dziadzi in later years.I have a photo of Your grandparents that I have been saving(it was among my late mom's things). I would be glad to share it.

Hello, I believe we may have an ancestral link. Stanislaw Yurek (Jurek) was the older brother of my grandmother Maria Yurek Halgren. When I have time I will look closely at your posts and tree, and if possible would like to compare notes.

Oh wow. My mother is Dolores Halgren. Uncle Charlie, I never considered him in those terms. I don't know where to start. Do you have any documents relating to the Yurek (Jurek) family? Solid documents I have is mostly for my grandmother (Maria), and I have a copy of their Visa application from Poland (circa 1924). Other than that I have ancestry tips like census and SS records. I was not exposed to family history growing up, and I don't want that to be the case for my young sons so I'm gathering what I can for their benefit. I was able to get some information from Mary Halgren before she passed, and Kathleen Halgren, but other than that there's not much out there. So, you were once known as Eugenia Yurek?

Yes, my maiden name. I do not have any more information other than what I posted on the Yurek side of the tree. My father, (the oldest son)Stanley, died in 1964(too soon) and my mom Stephanie lost touch with his family. Your great grandpa Jacob had a butcher shop in Bayonne(I was told) and his wife my Grandma Anna was a quiet, sweet woman who worked so hard in the home with a big brood of kids.I think the only living relatives would be Mary Halgren's brothers(my uncles)--Chester(in Bayonne) and Steven. No girls are alive.
I will jog my memory later today and give you my e-mail address.

One of the census reports indicates Jacobus Jurek was a butcher. I've heard stories that the Anna (Lech) Yurek's family was merchants in Poland (Jodlowa, Poland), and that she and all of the kids returned to Poland around 1920 or so. They returned to the US around 1924. Here is a link to a copy of the Visa application that includes a group photo of the children. There's two pages. The second page has a group photo of the six oldest siblings. A very attractive bunch.

If you check my profile you should be able to link to my tree. It's named "Borowski".

I think you are correct that Chester still lives in Bayonne, and I have information that Stephen lives in Spring Hill, Florida near his daughter Cecilia. I have not been able to contact either one. Word has it there was a large contingent of Yurek's in Bayonne in the early to middle part of the 20th century, and there's still a sizeable remnant of relations present today. Do you have any idea why they changed the surname from Jurek to Yurek?

The "J" letter would have a "Y" (yeh)(as in young) sound so it was important to the to be more American sounding.
Most people at that time would have referred to the "J" with the same sound in the word jump. My dad said that the polish word for hole was JURA--so I guess they didn't want that association. Unlike these days with special schooling and classes for foreign born students--they were expected to absorb English and get "with it" no matter how difficult. One of my e-mail addresses is "jawsie66@comcast.net". I would be happy to tell you anything I know although it might take some jogging of my memory.
