The "J" letter would have a "Y" (yeh)(as in young) sound so it was important to the to be more American sounding.
Most people at that time would have referred to the "J" with the same sound in the word jump. My dad said that the polish word for hole was JURA--so I guess they didn't want that association. Unlike these days with special schooling and classes for foreign born students--they were expected to absorb English and get "with it" no matter how difficult.One of my e-mail addresses is "
