The "J" letter would have a "Y" (yeh)(as in young) sound so it was important to the to be more American sounding.
Most people at that time would have referred to the "J" with the same sound in the word jump. My dad said that the polish word for hole was JURA--so I guess they didn't want that association. Unlike these days with special schooling and classes for foreign born students--they were expected to absorb English and get "with it" no matter how difficult. One of my e-mail addresses is "jawsie66@comcast.net". I would be happy to tell you anything I know although it might take some jogging of my memory.

Brian, please be patient if I don't respond as quickly as I have. If I don't get to the pierogis soon my family will be distraught. Just kidding, the "sweet" cabbage are done, now for the cheese. Christmas Eve is coming all too soon for me. I work full time--but--I will get it all done. If I think of anything else that will help you, I will answer your e-mail. I applaud you for what you are doing; our "roots" determine who we are and I am happy to be in touch with someone related to my dear father.

Pierogis sounds wonderful.

Not sure if you know the parents of Jacobus Jurek were Adamus Jurek and Sofia Furman. The parents of Anna Lech were Josephus Lech hand Marianna Wal.

Do you recall any of the Lech's or Wal's in Bayonne, maybe on Prospect Avenue? I don't recall the names off the top of my head, will have to check records, but a Lech and a Wal sponsored my grandmother's Baptism. Census records show Lech's and Wal's residing on the east side of Bayonne in the 1930.
