I am a direct line decendant from Henry and Barbara Koonce.
I have my line forward, but have not been able to get any further back than Henry born 1771. I haven't even been able to verify that birth date. If I can be of any help to you I would love to help and if you have any information I would love to have it.

Ami, I saw your posting. I am also searching for information on my great grandmother, Louisa Kathryn who married James A Wallace who had 16 Children. I grew up in the Wallace community with most of these children. My grandfather is Edward Hudson Wallace who married Lucy Elizabeth Long. I, too am eager to learn more about the family. Koonce, Robert Norris - Texas, originally from Tennessee

I am searching for information on Robert Norris Koonce and his first wife, Laura Greer. Robert was from Tennessee and Laura was from Georgia. Not sure if Greer is the correct last name. Their children are Willie Mabel, Mabry and Robert Smith Koonce. Robert Smith is my grandfather. We believe that Laura was either half or full Cherokee. Also believe that Robert Norris' parents were Robert M Koonce and Sarah E. Cotner. But again not sure. The attached picture is Laura Greer Koonce, Mabel, Mabry and Robert Smith Koonce.

George W. Mose Koonce b,1866 Louisiana, was the son of George Washington (aka Pratt) Koonce 1825-1925 (unk parents)and Mary 'Polly Herrin 1841-1930. She was the daughter of William' Bill' Herrin and Prudence Jane Stark.

George W. Mose Koonce married Lydia Ella Betty b. 1871 in Imperial, now what is Calcasieu Parish, LA. They had 5 kids:

Thanks, Marge. Twenty years and still plugging away suggests I've not let the spelling of names deter me. I finally found a Burton McGee out of NC who morphed into Burton McGhee in GA, then he disappeared, only to turn up in AR as Burton Megee. I know that most names were spelled phonetically - at least more or less - until maybe the late 1800, early 1900s. But I appreciate the advice!

Don't let the spelling of a name hinder your research. I have a Campbell I'm researching...I check Cammel, Cambpell, Kimble, Gamble...etc. Good ol' Ellis Campbell...used Cammel on land records...but they were done by a neighbor. He died and another neighbor put Elias Campbell...who knows. We check them all.
Yes, takes longer...but we know some way back then were not very good spellers...and some didn't read or write at all.

LaNelle, I would be so interested in talking with a direct descendent of John. I too often write from memory, so what I write generally has to be taken with a grain of salt, but I do my best to stick with what I know. I'd love a picture of Nancy and Phillip's tombstone for my files, and, as I said, would love to be in contact with John's descendent.

Nancy Dodson who first married McGee was my Dr. William Riley Dodson's sister. She later married Phillip Koonce and they are buried in Lincoln County, Tennessee. I have pictures of their tombstones. I am related to the McGees, Koonce and Dodsons. Philip Koonce was an uncle of my George R Koonce who was married to Letticia McGee. I am writing all of this from memory as I am in South Charleston, WV at this moment. I write to a direct descendant of the John McGee Line and he may be able to help you. When I was last in touch with him he lived in Madison, MS

Donny, your info re the name of John McGee's father was David, whose father was also David. I suppose what I'd really like to know, besides the query in the post I just published, is what is known that would support the contention that John died in an Indian battle.

The spelling of the McGee/McGhee name: On all the records in NC it is McGee, but by 1834 my 3xgrandfather James name is spelled McGhee in records found in GA. His wife, Mary, was Crouch in NC, is Couch by 1850, the year James died, in GA records. So he gained a letter, she lost one. No harm, no foul, I suppose, but it does make researching more difficult.

Am I right, LaNelle, that Leticia McGeeKoonce, is the dau of John McGee and has her stepfather's name appended? The Koonce line is very indirect to my line, stemming as it does from the marriage after her husband died "in an Indian battle" and she and her brothers, perhaps also with my 3xgrandparents, James McG(h)ee and Mary C(r)ouch, immigrated from NC to TN of Nancy Dodson McGee to Koonce. Interested in everything about Nancy Dodson as it relates to her time in NC and her connection with the McG(h)ees after leaving NC. Have little info on the Koonce line to share but for those who are interested, there is a book that contains the genealogies of all or most Dodsons as of the date it was published (late 1800s, early 1900s). Can't think of its name, but should not be hard to find.

Caroline and Campbell Tate Koonce 's daughter named Mary Jane Koonce married to David Williams was my great-grandparent. My knowledge of my Koonce side is very slight..My Koonce mother and her two sisters were raised in orphanage since their parents died while they were small so they did not have much memory of before that. I have found they are on that Pea Ridge Relations page so that has been helpful..I recently retired and am finding time to research family now..The names you show are my ancestors also..I would be descended from Nancy Dodson/John McGee daughter Letty/George Koonce son Calvin McEwen Koonce/Sarah Clauch son James K.P.Koonce/Lethia Price daughter Rosa Mae/John Dowlen..Those are my parents..My mother was Rosa Mae Koonce.

I have found no records to indicate that my grandfather Douglas Wade Koonce actually married my grandmother Sybil Trainer. I have also been trying to find traces of his prison records and or other records on him but have not turned anything up.

Sorry about the severe delay in response but i recently have been using a friends account to get the history of the koonce family. Feel free to look at my tree on this account it dates back to the 1500s although not everything is fully branched out yet. I am still having no luck tracking down info on my g-grandfathers children including my own grandfather tho.

He married Ann Gibson (Who may have been related to Martha Ann Gibson that Married Owen Thomas Koonce many years later in Kentucky)
Ann Gibson was born in Perquimans, NC, USA, D: Unknown but I believe around 1790 - 1795. (She remarried to a William Lipsey Aft. 1772 Jones Co., or Onslow Co., North Carolina)

The Hovis Family of Venango county, Pa. are descendants of John Theodore Hofius, a native of Prussia, and a minister of the Reformed church. His first settlement was in Bedford county, Pennsylvania; then he removed to Washington county, where he married Nancy Baker, who bore him four sons and one daughter:
1. George, who settled in Hickory township, Mercer county, about 1800, where his father died in 1808, at an advanced age;
2. William, who settled in West Virginia near Wheeling;
3. Ernest, who located in Irwin township, Venango county;

I live in Dothan and I'm a bona fide local history nut. I'm currently interested in a small cemetery that contains 21 marked graves, and only 9 with inscriptions. The cemetery is the only remaining portion of what was once the county poorhouse and farm. Among the graves is one for Hattie Koonce Hayes. A quick ancestry.com check turned up a 1920 census record of Hattie in Dothan living with her mother, Lizzie, and siblings Jesse, Webster, Edmond, Amerikie, Carlie, Lilie Mae, and Hosea. Another quick check turned up the following local deaths: Lizzie in 1975, Webb in 1985, Ed in 1996, and Hosea in 2001.

To learn more about the cemetery, I would dearly love to talk with relatives of Hattie. Given that the some of the family was still here just a few years ago, I'm hoping to find some of them. I'd really appreciate a message back.
