My grandfather is John Kon. Apparently he & his brothers immigrated from a port in Russia. He ended up in Quebec. All I have is a birthdate & possibly 2 other brothers names. Isn't it quite a stretch from Domakowski to Kon? Any idea how they came up with that name change?
Lisa Wood nee Kon.

Hi Lisa, the John Kon I am referring to would be a greatuncle to me. John, had two brothers that would of been Joseph and Walter. He had other siblings but they were all deceased before 1900. John parents came over from Russia and lived in Illinois until there death. I do not know why John choose the last name of Kon. My father also changed his name. He took the name Miller, which was suppose to to Miela, after his mother. When he went to have it changed by the attorney he gave the name to the office secretary and she understood Miller. When he went back to the attorney who was also a judge and discovered the mistake he was told that it could be changed to Miela for another $400.00. My father didn't have the money, so Miller was okay by him. When my sister asked my dad about changing his last name he said no one ever said anything to him and that his uncle (his father's brother) changed his name. He said he and his uncle changed the last name because of his father. His dad was not a very nice or good person, rather bad in fact. My mother and father went to see John Kon a couple of times. My mother could remember seeing him. She showed me about where John Kon lived and I went to the library in Hammond, Indiana and researched in old directories, etc. Would love to hear from you to explore futher info. Please contact me. Hi Betty, I e-mailed you yesterday but forgot to say that my John Kon was a child when he came over from Russia, or at least we think he was.
