First of all, is your family Greek Catholic or Roman catholic. Roman catholic are the Polish. I know you mentioned" Russian" speaking.
this is important. Just so that we are talking about the same people.
Usually every village had at least one person or family that had the same surname as the village they lived in.
The village of Komancza was once called the Komancza Republic and the surname for these Komanetskis came from there. As in my family there was a Mr. Chystohorbski
in Chystohorb and a Jawornicka in Jawirnyk etc. The records for all these villages etc start in about 1786 and that is where the name is first found.
All the surnames were changed to Polish spellings adding the sz and other letters. Ex. Komanetsy to Komaneszki, surname Chystohorbski to Czystogorski,
Feshanin to Feszanycz etc.
Have you searched the films for Wislok or for Komancza? I have both on film. My family is from Komancza,Wislok,Jawirnyk, radocycze, Czystohorb etc from
the surrounding villages.
Let me know about the religion. But I am certain that your family was Greek Catholic/Ruthenian/Rusyn.
It is a sad mistake but in the USA 80% of the people who say they are russian are actually Rusyn /Ruthenian. Espescially from this region.
They belong to the Russian Orthodox Church but should be Greek Catholic /Byzantine Rite/Ukrainian. This is a big mess.
The town of Komancza still exists with a church Greek Catholic and Greek Orthodox for the same people who were once again divided .
I hope you know the history of what happened in 1945 - 1947 Operation Vistula/Actsia Wisla. This was the ethnic cleansing by the Poles and Russians(Moscow)
Your grand mother missed all that by going to America. My family did not.
But,the churches did not only keep records at the church. Other copies of church records were also kept at the Deaneries and the
main city which could have been Bukowsko or Rzezow or Peremysl or Komancza etc for your village of Surowice.
Some village records are found in the strangest places!
I did find Jacob on Ellis Island passenger list. There is a Jacob age 36 going to Chicago to brother Gregory in 1903.
I know the Kachnycz name from wislok.
I will be going to the FHL tommorrow again. I always go on Thursdays.and I will search.
The village of surowica early records could be mixed in with any of these!!!!!! For example, I even found villages on films that were not even marked.
It is only that I know surnames well and noticed that the surnames changed.
Please let me know if you know any people who are from these villages who still remember and also please let me know if you have any photos from the villages and people before
the year 1947.

he Komancza Republic was an association of thirty Lemko villages, based around Komańcza in eastern Lemkivshchyna, that existed between 4 November 1918 and 23 January 1919. Its head of state was President of the Council Pantelejmon Shpylka. It was pro-Ukrainian and planned to unite with the West Ukrainian People's Republic, but was suppressed by the Polish government as part of the Polish–Ukrainian War.

The Republic's fate was sealed by the Treaty of Saint Germain, which gave Galicia west of the San to Poland.[1]
